This week: Schmidt's Naturals, Taza Chocolate, Smart Flour Foods launch new products

Karuna, maker of plant-based, eco-friendly superfood beverages, launched a new trio of products: a turmeric-infused coffee drink made with coconut cream (Karuna Boost: Cafe Turmerific); a red wine-infused coffee drink (Karuna Boost: Cafe Vino); and a protein and carb drink made from the pulp of the bean sprouts and aronia berries used to make other Karuna drinks (Karuna Fuel: Divine Pinkalicious). The St. Louis-based company launched its first products earlier this year.

Organic, stone-ground chocolate maker Taza Chocolate is debuting a line of 80 percent dark chocolate snacking thins with just 6 to 7 grams of sugar per serving. Taza starts with 80 percent dark chocolate and mixes in crispy quinoa, then adds toppings. Dark Bark is launching with five flavors: Sea Salt & Almond, Toasted Coconut, Pumpkin Seed, Coconut Almond and Peppermint. 

Deerland Enzymes & Probiotics, a leading international enzyme and probiotic-based dietary supplement formulator, specialty service provider and contract manufacturer, has been granted a Natural Product Number for Bacillus subtilis DE111, a genome sequenced and clinically studied probiotic strain that supports gut health. This new product license issuance by the Natural Health Products Directorate of Health Canada allows DE111 to be sold throughout Canada.

Food technology startup Impossible Foods announced the hiring of National Center for Biotechnology Information Director David J. Lipman, MD, as chief science officer. Lipman will be part of Impossible Foods' leadership team and oversee research and development, and information technology. 

Aquaponics farming innovator Urban Organics introduced nine new blends of its locally grown greens in 5 oz. recyclable post-consumer plastic clamshells. Its first urban farm launched three years ago in East St. Paul, Minnesota, and a second location is coming soon. Urban Organics farms fish and produce using aquaponics, a closed-loop system that combines aquaculture and hydroponics and uses 2 percent of the water consumed by traditional agriculture.

Schmidt's Naturals expands its Sensitive Skin deodorant line with three new scents: Coconut Pineapple, Jasmine Tea and Lavender Tips. The star ingredient in the Sensitive Skin formula is magnesium, which is essential for the body's daily functions and helps neutralize odor-causing bacteria. 

SoCal beverage brand Tisane Teas has a new ready-to-drink "Alkaline Tea" line comprising two flavors, Hibiscus Berry and Vanilla Chai, both of which are built on an organic rooibos tea base, making them naturally high in antioxidants and caffeine-free. Each 16.9 oz. container contains 50 calories.

SunTropics' new dairy- and gluten-free coconut milk-based puddings are now available for retail ordering. The two-packs of single-serve cups come in four flavors: Original, Sea Salt Caramel, Cinnamon and Classic Cocoa. Each small batch of whole coconut milk, Thai rice and freshly shaved coconut is slowly simmered without the use of preservatives and poured into single-serving cups.

Charles J. Muth is the new chief growth officer at Beyond Meat, a leader in creating plant-based protein. He'll be responsible for driving distribution and growth of Beyond Meat's products at retail and foodservice. Muth previously led the creation of Coca-Cola Co.'s Venturing and Emerging Brands sales organization, and was vice president of sales at Honest Beverages.

Smart Flour Foods, a leading provider of premium, ancient-grain based frozen pizzas, is introducing Snack Bites, the first gluten-free pizza snacks on the market. Made with the company’s proprietary flour blend of the ancient grains sorghum, amaranth and teff, plus the superfood addition of chia, they're available in the time-tested pizza flavors Three Cheese, Uncured Pepperoni, and Pepperoni & Sausage Combo. Smart Flour Foods’ Snack Bites are filled with a real, hormone-free mozzarella, parmesan, and romano cheese blend, along with uncured, nitrate and nitrite-free pepperoni in the meat versions.

Online grocer Peapod introduced three new meal kits featuring Frontera, the gourmet Mexican food line from chef Rick Bayless and Conagra brands. The kits contain pre-measured, pre-cut and pre-washed ingredients for meals made in 30 minutes or less that can be added to customers' Peapod carts along with all other grocery and pantry essentials. Currently available in Peapod's Chicago market and rolling out to others this summer, the prepared recipes include Grouper with Tomatillo-Avocado Sauce, Ancient Grain Chorizo Cazuela and Sweet + Savory Pork Tacos.

The two newest flavors of Zippy Bites, which are chocolate truffles infused with natural energy from caffeine, guarana, amino acids and B vitamins, are Dark Chocolate Raspberry and Salted Caramel. 

Aker BioMarine has expanded its US sales team to include Kate Pastor and Elise Kaiser. Kate joins the company as senior vice president of sales with nearly 25 years of experience in the natural products industry. Most recently, she was president of Twinlab Health & Natural and EVP of TCC. Elise has been in the natural products industry for nearly 14 years, with experience including retail and product sales for a variety of companies. 

Online retailer Swanson Health has a new line of probiotic supplements that focus on a variety of health benefits including digestive health, immune health, colon health and flora. Each variety offers billions of colony forming units ranging from an everyday dose of 1 billion CFUs to a high-potency dose of 66 billion CFUs. 

GrandyOats, a Maine maker of organic cereals and snacks, has received the Environmental Merit Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The award, presented annually, recognizes outstanding environmental advocates in the New England region for making significant contributions toward preserving and protecting natural resources, and ensuring New England remains a vibrant community with clean air, land, and water. In particular, the award recognizes efforts by GrandyOats owners Nat Peirce and Aaron Anker to convert an abandoned elementary school into a solar-powered organic bakery that now employs more than 25 people in rural Maine. 

New from Bob's Red Mill is a Paleo Pancake & Waffle Mix made from a blend of almond flour, arrowroot starch, organic coconut flour and leavening, and Protein Pancake & Waffle Mix, made from whey protein, pea protein, buttermilk and vital wheat gluten. The two mixes are ideal for consumers leading a paleo lifestyle and those seeking to add more protein to their meals, respectively.
