EarthFruits: Bringing the Exotic Fruits of the Amazon To the Global Marketplace

Para, Brazil, - First it was pomegranate, now it is Acai, what will be the next superfood to hit the headlines? According to Kevin Busby, EarthFruits USA, General Manager, “Açai has gained significant market share in the US, and manufacturers are now looking for the next hot ingredient. There is a growing interest in Cupuacu, which is a member of the chocolate family.” Cupuaca (coo-poo-uh-sue) seeds can be made into cupulate, which looks and tastes just like chocolate but is cheaper and more resistant to heat. Whatever food and beverage manufacturers are looking for, EarthFruits is in a unique position to supply the global marketplace with the next trendsetting exotic fruit.

As one of the world’s biggest exporters of Açai, Camu Camu, Amazon Soursop, Acerola, and Cupuaçu, EarthFruits substantially contributes to the 41.1 million tons of fruit produced in Brazil each year.

Currently, Brazil is the world's third largest fruit product exporter, after China and India. In fact, the Brazilian Fruit Institute (IBRAF) ranked fruit exports fifth among the best-performing Brazilian agricultural products. In the last four years Brazilian fruit has seen a 91% increase in sales, after ethanol, sugar, meats, coffee and grains.

“Right now, we export to 6 countries,” explained Kevin Busby, EarthFruits USA, General Manager. “We plan to establish facilities in Europe as the market demand increases in coming years.”

Located in Para, the heart of the Açai harvesting region, EarthFruits works in partnership with processors throughout the Amazon territory to harvest, process and export only the most efficacious Amazonian fruits. By establishing key relationships in Brazil and maintaining exclusive contracts with the leading manufacturing facilities, EarthFruits is already a step above their competition.

“We currently work with processors and farmers in all 3 states of the Amazon; that includes Para, Rondonia, and Amapá but we also intend to expand to the other states as well,” explained Fernanda Stefani, EarthFruits Brazil, General Manager. “This allows us to not only export Açai but to also introduce many other fruits that are growing in popularity.”

And growing it definitely is. According to the IBRAF, in 2006 over 130 thousand tons of juices, pulps and other fruit products were exported from Brazil with the US spending close to 400 million dollars. The superfood and beverage market is expected to double in by 2011 with soy products and exotic fruits leading the way, according to NutraIngredients.com (Aug, 2007).

EarthFruits unique location and infrastructure also lends itself to preserving the natural fields where the fruits are grown and to helping support the economic development of the people living in and around the harvesting territory. With a serious commitment to sustainability, EarthFruits supports various sociably responsible programs and practices.

“We want to help the world by preserving all its treasures and assisting its people,” said Stefani. “We believe that we can enjoy the fruits of the world without destroying it.”

EarthFruits specializes in providing tropical fruits from the Amazon to the natural health and organic foods industries.
