Phytochem releases 1-DNJ mulberry leaf extract

Phytochem International Inc., an international distributor of standardized botanical extracts in the supplement industry, announces the release of Natural Mulberry Leaf Extract with 1 percent DNJ. 1-DNJ is believed to be the active ingredient for providing the medicinal benefits of mulberry leaf.

Mulberry was promoted on “The Dr. Oz Show” on Sept. 27 as “the next big thing for your health."

Phytochem’s manufacturer, Phytotech Extracts PVT, has been selling mulberry extract to Japan for more than 12 years and entered the Korean Market a number of years ago. The growth in the past three years has been exponential, more than doubling every year. There are more and more clinical studies coming out, especially in Japan

“The genie is out of the bottle: A relatively inexpensive botanical that is excellent for maintaining healthy blood sugar levels and lipid profiles has been brought to the forefront by Dr. Oz,” said Phytochem President Frank Li. “Combined with the many studies and the quick, beneficial results, this is a formula for mulberry leaf extract to emerge as a mainstream botanical extract”

Dr. Oz concentrated on two aspects of the mulberry, also known as Morus alba L. The first was the fruit and the second was the tea. Dr. Oz said, “It’s the leaves that are exciting scientists,” but he didn’t delve into why mulberry leaves are effective or discuss the different forms available in the market.

Dr. Oz only mentioned the tea, but mulberry leaf extract supplements on the market are much more potent than the tea. In addition, America is not a nation of tea drinkers. We prefer to pop a capsule or tablet. Superiority of the leaf extracts over the tea lies on the higher concentration of the active ingredients for increased activity in maintaining healthy blood sugar levels. It is also a very good free radical scavenger.

Mechanism of action
1-DNJ is a kind of alkaloid iminosugar that is present in the mulberry extract. (It also found in some of the bacterial strains.) It acts by inhibiting the alpha-glucosidase enzyme and thereby reducing the breakdown of starch and other complex sugar into glucose.

The ingredient of the mulberry (1-DNJ) is very similar to acarbose; synthetic analogue and prescription drug in Germany and other countries. In addition, mulberry contains number of essential phytonutrients and many other phytochemical such as flavonoids, vitamin C, quercetin, isoquercetin and anthocynidines.

Many studies are coming out, but one really interesting study that is raising eyebrows in the nutrition world is research on 50 healthy human subjects conducted by Hye In Chung et. al., which focuses on mulberry leaf extract, investigated as a potent inhibitor of alpha-glucosidase enzyme.

Another exciting feature of mulberry is that it’s relatively inexpensive. The highest quality extract such as IMINOSOL® standardized to 1 percent 1-DNJ is being sold very economically. A month’s supply on the retail level should sell for less than $20.

Mulberry leaf extract contains many other bioactive compounds and Phytochemicals. Synergistically they are very effective in lowering Blood Sugar Levels and controlling Cholesterol and Tri-Glycerides.

Unlike some botanical extracts positive results from Mulberry Leaf Extracts are immediate and measurable. A Diabetic or individual with Blood Sugar Issues, simply begin taking the extract, monitors blood sugar levels with a quick test and learn very quickly that Mulberry Leaf Extract does what it’s supposed to.

Tom Winn, Sales and Marketing Manager  at Phytochem says “Whenever the results of taking a Botanical Extract is easily measurable and the result very good, the botanical becomes very popular and eventually goes mainstream”.

The American Diabetes Association states that in 2011 there were 25.8 Million Children and Adults in the U.S with Diabetes. This is a huge market for a Low priced Botanical Extract effective in lowering blood sugar levels.
