Guayusa Powder comes from the leaves of the holly tree, Ilex guayusa, native to Ecuador. It contains naturally occurring caffeine as well as antioxidants and other beneficial nutrients, making it a healthy, natural source of energy. Traditionally, the dried leaves are brewed similar to tea and consumed for their energizing effects. Due to these energizing effects, Guayusa has played an important role in the lives of the indigenous Amazonian people for over 2,000 years. Families would start their day by drinking gourds of it together while hunters would start their hunts with Guayusa to help them stay awake and alert, earning it the nickname "Night Watchman".
Guayusa leaves contain between 1.7 percent and 3.2 percent caffeine by dry weight but usually closer to the 2 percent range, which is less than Coffee Beans but more than Green Tea, Guarana, and Yerba Mate. BI's Guayusa Powder specifically contains a minimum of 2.5 percent naturally occurring caffeine. In addition to caffeine, Guayusa also contains nutrients important for our bodies including polyphenols, fiber, and protein.
- Clean label, natural source of energy—no synthetic substances
- Contains fiber and protein with essential amino acids—beneficial in sports nutrition
- High antioxidant activity—reduces oxidative stress
Guayusa has a subtle earthy aroma similar to green tea. However, unlike green tea and most other teas, Guayusa does not contain tannins. Tannins are the compounds that give tea their bitterness, giving Guayusa a milder and less bitter flavor than most teas. This makes Guayusa an easy ingredient to incorporate across a range of products:
- Energy products
- Functional foods
- Ready-to-drink teas
- Sports nutrition products
In addition, BI's Guayusa Powder is organic certified for products requiring certification.
