Dairy farmers in Brussels dumped about 3 million liters of milk on Belgian fields Wednesday to protest milk prices that have dropped 40 percent in recent months.
According to EUobserver.com, manure trucks dumped were used by about 300 farmers to cover fields near the town of Ciney in an attempt to get European politicians to address their plight.
While milk prices peaked in 2008, world markets have experienced significant drop to levels not seen since 1992. European dairy producers claim they will lose €10 billion by the end of the year, according to Copa and Cogeca, the European farmers' associations, EUobserver.com reported.
“The farmers want the EU to abandon plans to scrap milk quotas and are demanding the creation of a new European agency to orchestrate supply and demand for milk,” the Web site reported.
