“I’ll never be able to fully de-stress, even after the pandemic is completely over.”

That’s how half the respondents to a recent survey of 2,000 Americans1 said they felt. Not surprisingly, in 2020, the number of Americans who reached for prescription medications to ease stress symptoms soared, increasing by double digits.2 Many consumers, however, worry about pharmaceuticals’ potential side effects and chemical dependency. They crave natural solutions to sooth the stress they fear is not disappearing with face masks. It’s an ideal time to educate them about the potential stress-support benefits of cannabidiol (CBD).

As the world reels with stress promoting circumstances, the need for natural ingredient that promotes balance is clear. CBD is the most abundant, and well known, of over 113 compounds found in hemp. Non-intoxicating, the phtochemical CBD plugs into the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a system of chemical messengers and receptors throughout the body that helps regulate physiological functions that impact sleep, appetite, immunity, pleasure, pain, inflammation and more. It does so by helping keep these systems in sync—a state of balance known as homeostasis. In this state, our bodies perform at their best. Lots of things, however, disrupt homeostasis. Stress is a big one.

In 2020, stress was even more prevalent than tussles in the toilet paper aisle. With the pandemic looming and uncertain times. reported stress affected 8 out of 10 Americans in 2020, according to the American Psychological Association (APA). Two-thirds of those people reported an alarming increase in stress levels. The APA reported: “Americans have been profoundly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and that the external factors Americans have listed in previous years as significant sources of stress remain present and problematic. These compounding stressors are having real consequences on our minds and bodies.”3

Those consequences manifest differently in each of us. Some people feel tense, increasingly emotional or angry. Others experience physical symptoms, such as digestive issues, recurring infections and frequent headaches. Some people can’t sleep. Sleep loss is both a cause and a symptom of stress. Over time, sleep deprivation can have a considerable impact on overall health and wellbeing. Losing hours of restorative slumber can leave groggy sufferers emotionally drained and chronically unfocused in the short term. In the long term, it can increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, anxiety and depression.4 Nearly 40% of people don’t get enough sleep, with at least 45% admitting that poor sleep has impacted their life once in the past 7 days.5

CBD may offer help. CBD helps support mood and a healthy sense of calm. Based on the results of an internal CBDistillery/BHB consumer survey of 2,000 respondents, 9 out of 10 CBD users reported better sleep with CBD. Eighty-nine percent report that CBD helps calm their mind. Ninety-three percent reported they never experienced a negative side effect.

Some intriguing studies back these favorable responses. In a 2011 investigation, test subjects were given either CBD or a placebo before a public-speaking event. Participants receiving the CBD reported less stress-induced cognitive impairment, less physical discomfort, and lower stress levels.5

Not all CBD is equal, however. With more than 3,000 companies selling CBD products, choosing a brand could itself be a stress-inducing process. More than 2 million people trust CBDistillery. The Denver-based company sources its high-quality, competitively priced products from naturally cultivated crops grown from non-GMO industrial seeds on American soil. They use a proprietary extraction technique that does not use solvents—unique in the industry—for the cleanest products. CBDistillery pioneered third-party testing to ensure consistent quality, purity, and potency.

“One of the things we are proud about at Balanced Health Botanicals, parent company to CBDistillery, is that we are one of a handful of companies certified by The U.S. Hemp Authority,” says Balanced Health Botanicals Vice President Retail Sales & Marketing Sandi Gonzales.  The organization’s certification program is the hemp-derived CBD industry's initiative to provide high standards, best practices and self-regulation, giving consumers and retailers confidence in hemp and CBD products. “The US Hemp Authority seal on our products means that consumers and retailers have peace of mind that we are continually measured through a trusted independent third-party certification process,” she says. In challenging times, American consumers need support for stress now more than ever. “Retailers are in a unique position now to become part of the #CBDMOVEMENT by providing CBD in their stores for consumers to purchase, says Gonzales. “These purchases that would normally be made online are a win for the retailer and a win for the consumer who is looking for relief.”
