Cognis Achieves NSF International GMP Registration for Natural Vitamin E, Phytosterols and CLA – Complies with New FDA Regulations

August 4, 2008, La Grange, Ill. – Cognis Nutrition and Health, a global leader in health-enhancing ingredients for dietary supplements and functional foods, is proud to announce that it is one of the first suppliers to achieve Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Registration through NSF International’s Dietary Supplement Certification program for natural vitamin E, phytosterols and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). This independent certification confirms that Cognis complies with the FDA’s newly implemented GMPs for dietary supplement manufacturers. Cognis successfully met all of the program requirements for its production facilities in Kankakee, Illinois and Illertissen, Germany.

Cognis leads the industry as the only supplier to hold this registration for three of the top-selling wellness ingredients: Covitol® natural vitamin E, Vegapure® natural phytosterols, and Tonalin® CLA. For product information, visit Cognis may now claim NSF certification on their products and can add the NSF “Mark” to their printed materials certifying that these products were manufactured in NSF registered facilities.

GMPs are regulatory requirements that provide guidelines for necessary processes, procedures and documentation to assure the product produced has the identity, strength, composition, quality and purity it is represented to possess. NSF conducted an intensive plant audit to verify compliance with Dietary Supplement GMPs and will conduct periodic audits at Cognis’ facilities to ensure continued conformance. GMPs for the current NSF Dietary Supplements Program are included in NSF American National Standard 173-Dietary Supplements, the only American National Standard for Dietary Supplements, and are consistent with the requirements that FDA has mandated in 21 CFR § 111.

“This registration provides an invaluable benefit for our dietary supplement customers,” said David Hessler, Quality Assurance Leader, Cognis Nutrition & Health. “As a world leader in supplying the finest health-enhancing ingredients, Cognis has taken the initiative to complete this rigorous process to ultimately make GMP conformance easier for Dietary Supplement manufacturers by making sure we’re in compliance so they are as well. As a result of our affirmed compliance, this certification will help our customers eliminate the need for costly and time-consuming plant audits.”

Mr. Hessler explained that international businesses will be especially interested in this registration. “We are now pleased to offer our existing and potential global customers certification from an unbiased third party which clearly demonstrates that Cognis is compliant to the FDA’s defined GMPs for Dietary Supplements.”

According to NSF International, “Cognis’ GMP registration reflects their continued commitment to ensuring quality and satisfaction and gives companies confidence that their organization operates in conformance to established GMPs.” For meeting GMP requirements, Cognis receives a NSF GMP registration certificate and is listed on the NSF Web site.
