Make Food Choices That Matter

Recommendation

Rationale

Notes

Eat 8 servings of fruits and vegetables/day.

This new dietary recommendation (increased from 5 servings/day) may help combat hypertension.

A serving is a cup of raw or a half-cup of cooked vegetables or a piece of fruit. Eat "rainbow servings" of fruits and vegetables—include all the colors in your weekly diet.

Drink in moderation.
women: 1 drink/day men: 2/day

Small amounts of alcohol may be beneficial to your health, but large quantities are harmful.

Moderate amounts of red wine may be beneficial for heart patients. Dry red wine has tannins that increase "good" HDL cholesterol levels.

Drink 8-10 glasses of water/day.

Water helps with dry skin, flushes toxins from the body and is necessary for optimal internal organ function.

Add a lemon or lime wedge for variety. Carry a water bottle when you leave the house.

Eat a high-fiber diet and avoid highly processed foods.

Fiber aids digestion and staves off diabetes and obesity.

Look for whole-grain products. Avoid white flour and refined sugar.

Eat a low-fat diet.

Minimizing fat intake reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and obesity.

Get fat from olive oil, olives, nuts, avocado or lean meats. Limit fatty meats, cheeses and butter.

Even Good Eaters Need Some Extra Nutrients

Recommendation*

Rationale Notes

Calcium and magnesium

Both minerals have a calming effect on the nervous system; children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD have responded positively to supplementation.

Give right before bed because these minerals aid sleep.

Essential fatty acid (EFA) complex

Kids may not get enough EFAs from foods, especially if they don't like fish. Some children with ADD and ADHD have an EFA deficiency.

Choose a blend that contains at least 100 mg omega-3 essential fatty acid DHA. Symptoms of EFA deficiency include excessive thirst, frequent urination and dry hair and skin.

Flaxseed
(Linum usitatissimum)

An essential fatty acid source that helps improve constipation, dry skin and inflammatory skin conditions.

Take as ground seeds or oil. Too much in oil form can cause diarrhea.

Iron

This mineral keeps red blood cells working and healthy. Breast milk and formula are usually adequate sources up to 6 months. Teen girls need extra iron to replace what's lost during menstruation; teen boys need extra iron to support rapid growth.

Deficiency can lead to fatigue, irritability and headaches. An iron overdose is life threatening, so never give iron supplements without consulting a health professional.

Multivitamin

Studies have shown that children taking multivitamins may do better academically and exhibit less antisocial behavior; some children with ADHD improve with supplementation.

Supplements do not substitute for a healthy, balanced diet. Follow label recommendations.

Vitamin B complex

This is a necessary cofactor in lots of neural activity; some experts report success giving B complex to children with ADHD.

Most B vitamins have no side effects. B3 (niacin) can cause skin flushing; time-released niacin has been associated with liver damage; very high doses of B6 can cause numbness or tingling.

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin)

B12 helps build strong myelin sheath to insulate nerves; it is important for DNA synthesis and necessary for healthy red blood cells. Because B12 is found in animal products, vegans risk deficiency.

Soy contains B12, but it's not as active as the form found in animal products.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)

This antioxidant boosts the immune system; helps with bone development, collagen formation and connective tissue that stabilizes muscles and bones; enhances iron absorption; and is important to neurotransmitters, gum health and hormone and amino acid synthesis.

Many nutritionists believe the older teen (and adult) daily dose should be as high as 200 mg. Too much vitamin C can cause diarrhea.

Vitamin D

This vitamin promotes calcium and phosphorus absorption for strong bones. Breastfed infants, children in cloudy climates, and vegans are at risk for deficiency. Supplementing infants has been associated with greater bone density later in life.

This is the only vitamin a baby needs more of than adults do. Consult with health experts before giving any supplement to infants. Sunshine naturally stimulates the body's vitamin D production.

Vitamin E

This antioxidant enhances immunity and protects cell membranes.

Excess E can lead to muscle weakness, fatigue, nausea and diarrhea.

Zinc

Zinc is important for cell division, hormone manufacture, immunity, skin healing, growth, vision and metabolism. Vegetarians can be at risk for deficiency.

Pregnant and nursing women need 11-40 mg zinc/day.

IFT Science Addresses E. coli O157:H7 Outbreak

CHICAGO-Since June, nearly 60 people have fallen ill from ground beef and romaine lettuce contaminated by E. coli O157:H7-a legitimate health concern since this strain of bacteria accounts for 62,000 illnesses and 52 deaths a year. Surprising facts about E. coli, characteristics of this and other deadly pathogens and methods to control them are all in the latest Expert Report Emerging Microbiological Food Safety Issues, published this year by the not-for-profit Institute of Food Technologists.

"Half of all cattle in the country can carry E. coli O157:H7 at some time in their lives," said IFT president Philip Nelson, Ph.D. "It is in their digestive tract, it's in their feces, and it's in their manure" that is used as crop fertilizer where it can flow with water runoff and into reservoirs. The pathogen can get also into food during slaughter via fecal contamination, according to the report.

The IFT Expert Report addresses the many alternatives that exist and are utilized to process foods for improved safety, and reviews how transportation, storage, and retail and food service affect food safety.

"IFT has long recognized that good manufacturing and hygienic practices, safe food handling techniques and sound scientific processes like irradiation are the best defense against foodborne dangers like E. coli," said Nelson, "But no single measure can provide iron clad assurances against these pathogens." The report notes that varieties of these pathogens are believed to have existed for millions of years while also evolving daily.

According to the report, irradiation can reduce-but not necessarily eliminate-harmful microorganisms that survive processing practices.

"Irradiation adequately controls E. coli O157:H7 in meat and destroys more than 99.9 percent of Salmonella," said Mark McLellan, Ph.D., director of the Institute of Food Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University and president-elect of IFT, "But hepatitis A and other viruses are resistant to irradiation."

IFT provides extensive background on irradiation in this expert report and in its 1998 Scientific Status Summary on Irradiation of Food, online at www.ift.org/publications/sss/irradiation.pdf.

Annually, there are 76 million cases of foodborne illness in the country, attributing for 5,000 deaths. Only 18 percent of these illnesses are attributed to known causes, according to information within the IFT Expert Report, available online at www.ift.org/govtrelations/microfs/.

Twinlab Corporation Reports Second Quarter 2002 And Six Month Results

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 30, 2002--Twinlab Corporation (NASDAQ: TWLB) today announced its results for the quarter and six months ended June 30, 2002.

The Company incurred a net loss of $(3.6) million or $(0.13) per share for the second quarter of 2002, versus a net loss of $(7.1) million or $(0.25) per share for the second quarter of last year. The net loss for the quarter ended June 30, 2002 includes a net benefit of approximately $0.5 million relating to proceeds received from a litigation settlement offset by the recording of reserves for litigation matters and related costs. Second quarter net sales were $42.7 million compared to $49.0 million in the comparable quarter last year.

For the six months ended June 30, 2002, the Company reported net income of $0.1 million, versus a net loss of $(23.0) million or $(0.80) per share for the first six months of 2001. Net sales for the six months ended June 30, 2002 were $90.9 million compared to $101.7 million in the comparable period last year. Net income for the six months ended June 30, 2002 includes a federal income tax benefit of $6.9 million representing a refund received by the Company in addition to the net litigation benefit discussed above. The net loss for the six months ended June 30, 2001 included the loss on disposal of Changes International of $8.7 million.

Ross Blechman, Twinlab's Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer stated, "We continue to experience unfavorable sales comparisons to prior year comparable periods primarily as a result of lower sales to one major customer. However, completed cost reductions, while still not fully reflected in our results, have contributed to continuing positive cash flow from operations and we were able to repay $17 million of outstanding debt during the quarter. We expect additional annualized cost reductions in excess of $6 million, commencing in the first quarter of 2003, as a result of the consolidation of our manufacturing and distribution facilities announced last week."

Mr. Blechman added, "Although we have a great deal of work ahead of us to complete the facility consolidation, we believe our cost cutting and business rationalization decisions are substantially behind us. We are now refocusing on driving revenues through targeted marketing activities, strategic investments in product development and an expansion of our sales force."

Integrity Introduces Duet by StuartNatal; New Prenatal Vitamin Designed to Increase Compliance by Reducing Nausea

INDIANAPOLIS--(BW HealthWire)--July 31, 2002--Integrity Pharmaceutical Corporation announced today that it has launched a new prenatal vitamin formulated to reduce the side effects of stomach upset and nausea that many pregnant women get from their vitamins.

Duet(TM) by StuartNatal(R) is formulated for optimal prenatal nutrition with minimal side effects, and is available in both a tablet and a great tasting chewable form. Both products are available by prescription only.

"Physicians and nurses know that nausea is one of the primary reasons why women quit taking prenatal vitamins," said Keith Gates, chief executive officer of Integrity. "Duet(TM) by StuartNatal(R) has been developed to increase patient compliance and best meet the nutritional needs of expectant mothers and their babies, while causing as few side effects as possible. The introduction of Duet(TM) continues the long tradition of quality established by StuartNatal for the past 50 years. It represents our commitment to women's health and to introducing innovative products that make a difference in the lives of our patients."

The company has doubled its sales force for the introduction of Duet(TM) by StuartNatal(R) and will promote the product directly to over 12,000 OB/GYN specialists.

A new blend of iron
-------------------

Iron is a critical mineral in a pregnant women's diet. A common side effect of too much iron, however, is stomach upset and constipation. Duet(TM) by StuartNatal(R) delivers 29 mg of iron, over 100% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA), using a patented iron blend of ferrous fumarate and Ferrochel(R) which is formulated to be easy on the stomach and reduce nausea. Duet(TM) by StuartNatal(R) also contains 25 mg of vitamin B6, which has been shown in studies to be helpful in reducing the severity of nausea in pregnant women.

Both forms of Duet are very similar in nutritional content. Patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets can take Duet Chewable. A recent nationwide study concluded that the taste of Duet Chewable was comparable to the market leading chewable multi-vitamin. With Duet, women now can get optimal prenatal nutrition in a tablet or in a great tasting chewable.

Vitamin meets all applicable USP standards
------------------------------------------

Both forms of Duet(TM) by StuartNatal(R) meet all applicable United States Pharmacopeia (USP) standards for quality, potency, purity and dissolution for all active ingredients including folic acid. Meeting USP standards is not a requirement for vitamins in the United States and many vitamins do not meet this high standard. Folic acid is important in pregnant women because studies have shown that it reduces the occurrence of neural tube defects (NTDs) in the growing fetus. It has been documented that up to 70 percent of NTDs can be prevented if all women of childbearing age consumed 400 micrograms of folic acid every day, beginning before pregnancy.

Duet(TM) by StuartNatal(R) is the latest evolution in a line of prenatal vitamins that have carried the trusted Stuart(TM) or StuartNatal(R) names since 1954. Integrity acquired the StuartNatal(R) line from Wyeth-Ayerst, a division of American Home Products Corporation, now Wyeth (NYSE:WYE), in April 2000. Consumers and healthcare providers interested in more information about Duet(TM) by StuartNatal(R) can go to www.stuartnatal.com.

Ferrochel(R) (ferrous bis-glycinate chelate) is manufactured by and is a registered trademark of Albion International, Inc. Ferrochel is a well-tolerated, readily absorbed source of iron and is used as a food additive around the world. More information can be found at www.albion-an.com.

Integrity Pharmaceutical Corporation is a privately owned, fully integrated pharmaceutical company focused on providing innovative products for the Obstetrician/Gynecology and Urology specialties. The company, located in Indianapolis, IN, has a nationwide sales force and currently markets numerous products including Urimax(R), Duet(TM) by StuartNatal(R), StuartNatal(R) Plus 3(TM), and Stuart Prenatal(R). 'DIABESITY' On the Rise

Clinically-tested 'starch neutralizer' helps weight loss, blood sugar levels

Type 2 diabetes is growing hand-in-hand with increasing rates of obesity: carbohydrate control could be a key weapon. The term, DIABESITY, was coined when experts noted the growing number of people with Type 2 diabetes that are also overweight or obese. Diabetes affects over 15.7 million Americans and 2 million Canadians. Over 90% of diabetics have Type 2 diabetes, and of those, 60% are obese. For youth with Type 2 diabetes attributable to obesity, the number leaps to 97%.

Clinical studies show 21st century 'starch neutralizer' is safe and effective
Over 60 years ago, researchers discovered plants, particularly wheat and beans, contained a specific ingredient that blocks the action of the enzyme alpha amylase (that helps turns starch into sugar during digestion). There was huge interest in this discovery since researchers believed that reduction of starch digestion could improve carbohydrate tolerance in pre-insulin diabetics and aid weight control. While early 'starch blockers' as they were called, launched in the 1980s, failed to meet label claims, a new, concentrated, highly purified starch neutralizer, extracted from a portion of the white kidney bean, has shown much more specific anti-amylase activity and stability in humans. The new extract, known as Phase 2, is the first 'starch neutralizer' to show efficacy and safety in human studies.

Phase 2 slows the digestion and absorption of starches and sugars, thereby decreasing the rapid rise in blood sugar that occurs after eating. In clinical studies, it has been shown to reduce starch absorption and promote weight loss. In one study from Italy, participants lost an average of 6.6 pounds in 30 days, compared to only one pound for placebo. In another study, from the University of Scranton USA, Phase 2 was shown to help lower post-prandial glucose elevation to baseline values 20 minutes earlier than placebo. Sherry Torkos, an Ontario pharmacist and author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Women's Health for Canadians, says, "the starch neutralizer derived from the white kidney bean appears to be a safe, non-stimulant carbohydrate control mechanism that promotes weight loss by reduction of fat mass while preserving lean body mass. It was well tolerated in the clinical trials and participants showed no adverse side effects."

What's the connection between carbohydrate consumption, weight and diabetes?
Though North Americans have lowered their fat intake, excess carbohydrate consumption remains a problem—nearly one-half of total calories in the average diet are obtained from carbohydrates (200-300g carbohydrates per day or between 900-1350 calories). During digestion, carbohydrates are quickly broken down into glucose for energy for the body. Active people utilize this fuel source; inactive people store it as fat cells. Rising glucose levels also trigger the pancreas to release insulin to lower the glucose levels to normal. Constantly elevated glucose levels can result in insulin resistance, a hallmark feature of diabetes. Many people can control their blood glucose by following a careful diet and exercise program, and losing excess weight. Reducing carbohydrate consumption and/or the temporary neutralizing of carbohydrate absorption is key to weight loss, blood glucose management.

WHO says, obesity could have as big an impact on health care costs as smoking…
The May 2002 Canadian Community Health Survey states 48% of Canadians are overweight, of which 15% are obese - that's one in every seven Canadians. In 1997, Health Canada estimated the direct cost of obesity on the health care system to be $1.8 billion or 2.4% of total costs. Obesity leads to increased risk not only of diabetes but also for heart disease, arthritis and asthma. In Canada, diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death and accounts for $9 billion health care dollars.

Did you know…modest weight loss of 5-10% could improve insulin resistance?
The obesity epidemic has led to a never-ending introduction of weight loss programs, diets and drugs. According to AC Neilsen 2002, Canadians spend over $40 million per year on weight loss products. Consumers are looking for support to not only lose weight but maintaining that weight loss. How can people curb appetite, carbohydrate cravings and lose weight?

  • Limit the intake of starchy foods to three servings per day
  • Choose carbohydrates with a low glycemic index
  • Increase fibre intake to 25-35 grams per day
  • Eat plenty of protein. Aim for one gram of protein per kilogram of body weight, per day.
  • Utilize support nutrients such as citrus aurantium, green tea, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and Phase 2, a clinically proven 'starch neutralizer' (this ingredient is now used in weight loss products by several Canadian manufacturers such as Jamieson, Innovite)

Biolabs Cran-Max® and Capsugel®'s Licaps® Launch Newest Form of Cranberry Nutraceutical

Cape Cod, MA – June 2002 – While health experts have acknowledged for years that drinking cranberry juice provides antioxidant protection and helps promote urinary tract health, the downside for many consumers has been the added sugar and calories to their diets from having to consume large amounts of the juice to derive the health benefits.

Now, a new form of a cranberry nutraceutical called CRAN-MAX® has hit the market, offering the most effective way to acquire the benefits of the cranberry for the more than 30 million Americans who experience urinary tract infections each year. Developed by the nutraceutical experts at Cape Cod Biolabs and the scientists at Capsugel, a division of Pfizer®, one 500 mg capsule of CRAN-MAX® offers more benefit than drinking 8-10 (ounces/glasses) of cranberry juice, plus the benefit of not adding any sugar or calories to the diet. This is an especially effective alternative to juice for people with diabetes, and a less expensive option for everyone.

CRAN-MAX®’s superiority over and brand differentiation from other cranberry nutraceuticals is based on clinical testing as well as the combination of two unique delivery systems. Cape Cod Biolabs’ CRAN-MAX® with the patented BIOSHIELD® delivery system is contained in Capsugel’s Licaps® delivery system – a seamless two-part capsule with the visible liquid CRAN-MAX® inside.

Results from a national consumer survey conducted by Capsugel confirm that the concept of a visible liquid-filled capsule is one that is widely accepted by both men and women across all age groups of natural product and dietary supplement users. Consumers can make the connection between their existing knowledge of the benefits of cranberry juice for urinary tract health by seeing the CRAN-MAX® red cranberry formula in the visible liquid- filled Licap® capsules.

The key benefit of BIOSHILED®’s all natural matrix is that it maintains the integrity of the key nutrients found in the berries – the anthocyanadins – to the glucose bond. This allows the intact nutrients to be passed into the lower gastrointestinal tract (past the stomach acids into the proper digestive arm) where they can be absorbed via this natural time-release delivery system by the bloodstream and utilized by the body, ultimately gaining the benefits of the cranberry. Unlike some other forms of cranberry nutritional supplements, the nutrients of the cranberry in CRAN-MAX® are properly absorbed by the body through the patent-pending BIOSHIELD® technology.

Additionally, the BIOSHIELD® process is complimented by the Licaps® capsule made of natural gelatin and vegetarian which quickly releases the liquid contents to help facilitate effective absorption.

In a six month clinical trial conducted in the Czech Republic involving 49 participants (25 on CRAN-MAX® and 24 in a control group), researchers compared the efficacy of CRAN-MAX® as a prophylactic against a continuous low does chemotherapeutic regimen. The results favored CRAN-MAX® as a preventative against UTIs. During the study period the control group collectively suffered 55 UTIs while those patients on CRAN-MAX® had only nine recurrences. The researchers further noted that CRAN-MAX® was far less expensive and had no side whereas the control group had 14 adverse events. (copies of study available upon request).

Additionally, CRAN-MAX® has been shown as a prophylactic in a pilot study conducted by urologist Dr. Ronald Wheeler (copies of study available upon request). In the study, as compared with a chemotherapeutic agent, 2.3 women suffered a relapse with drug therapy as compared with only .33 using CRAN-MAX® which did not produce any side effects. The study showed more than 90 percent of the patients improved in a subjective evaluation by the patients themselves, and none felt worse. Further studies are currently underway in North America and Europe.

According to Tammy Mathis, Marketing Specialist for Capsugel®/Pfizer®, “Of all the cranberry products in the marketplace, we selected CRAN-MAX® because we were impressed with the clinical data on Cape Cod Biolabs’ CRAN-MAX®, and its superior BIOSHIELD® delivery system. We were certain we’d be creating a winning combination for the growing global population of health-conscious people.”

CRAN-MAX® is 100 percent pure cranberry fruit and is produced in a patented manufacturing process during which concentrated cranberry juice is infused into pure cranberry fiber. This process enhances and intensifies the natural beneficial constitutes of the whole cranberry – the fruit solids, seeds, skins, concentrated juices and fiber – to maintain the full, concentrated and synergistic spectrum of each fruit without the addition of any chemical solvents, preservatives, sugars, water, flavorings or colors. One pound of CRAN-MAX® is the equivalent to 34 pounds of fresh cranberries.

With the foundation of proven technologies from well respected companies, along with the scientific data supporting the superior effectiveness of the formula, consumers can be assured of CRAN-MAX® being the highest quality cranberry nutraceutical on the market.

Cape Cod Biolabs is one of the leading producers of cranberries in the world, and a supplier of other special fruit berry products, including organics, for over 10 years. Such berry products now being produced include BLUE-MAX® (Blueberry), ELDER-MAX® (Elderberry), BIL-MAX® (Bilberry), SAW-MAX® (Saw Palmetto), GRAPE-MAX® (Grapes) and EYE-MAX® (a combination of BLUE-MAX® and BIL-MAX® with Lutein), among others.

All Cape Cod Biolab’s products are 100% natural and use the whole fruit – the fruit solids, seeds, skins and concentrated juices – to maintain the full, concentrated and synergistic spectrum of each fruit or herb. The unique and patented manufacturing process uses all natural full spectrum fruit and herb with no chemical solvents or unnatural excipients. ADDITIONAL SUPPORTING INFORMATION

CAPE COD BIOLAB’S PATENT-PENDING BIO-SHIELD™ DELIVERY SYSTEM

The BIOSHIELD® technology is a revolutionary new way to ensure successful, stable, potent delivery of the maximum amount of nutrients or bioactives of fruits or herbs. The name itself implies its successful action: it acts as a shield by providing a natural coating which is released for the absorption process.

In addition to delivering nutrients exactly where they need to go over a sustained period of time, BIOSHIELD® enhances the absorption of the bioactives. The BIOSHIELD® process is a natural coating that is used to facilitate the absorption of the intact bioavailable anthocyanins and proanthocyanins. This all natural matrix protects these active ingredients of the fruit by delivering them past the stomach acids and prolonging their stability. Because the BIOSHIELD® product is derived totally from a natural fruit constituency, it is able to limit the rate of acid degradation of the bioactives while simultaneously assisting with their absorption.

The key benefit of BIOSHIELD®’s matrix is that it successfully maintains the integrity of the nutrients found in the berries – the anthocyanadins – to the glucose bond. This allows the intact nutrients to be passed into the lower gastrointestinal tract where they can be absorbed by the bloodstream and utilized by the body. This key action of absorption and metabolism has been investigated and demonstrated by Tsuda et al (studies available upon request). Because anthocyanadins are insoluable in water and if ingested in their non-glycosolodated state, they cannot be readily absorbed. On the other hand, those anthocyanins possessing the bound sugars will be water soluble, allowing the body to convert these hydrated anthocyanins into anthocyanidins at the ultimate site of action.

In addition to CRAN-MAX®, the premier product using the BIOSHIELD® technology, the company will also be offering high quality, high potency formulas utilizing their BIOSHIELD® technology on other berries. Soon to be launched products include BLUE-MAX® (Blueberry), ELDER-MAX® (Elderberry), BIL-MAX® (Bilberry), SAW-MAX® (Saw Palmetto), EYE-MAX® (a combination of BLUE-MAX® and BIL-MAX® with Lutein), among others, to be available in health food stores and on the internet.

CAPSUGEL®’S LICAPS® TECHNOLOGIES

Capsugel®, a division of Pfizer®, is a leading global manufacturer of two-piece capsules for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. Licaps® capsules are two-piece capsules that have been specifically designed to be sealed for secure containment of liquids and semi-solids. The success of this unique delivery system, developed by scientists at Capsugel®, is confirmed by a nationwide survey the company conducted which found that the concept of a visible, liquid-filled capsule is one that is widely accepted by both men and women across all age groups of natural product and dietary supplement users. Consumers have very positive perceptions of liquids, especially when they can see the liquid flowing inside a clear capsule.

The Licaps® liquid delivery system is a result of a proprietary method called LEMS (Liquid Encapsulation Microspray Sealing). The technology enables liquids to be contained in capsules with an invisible seal. Positioned to promote the multiple positive benefits perceived by consumers in a visible liquid capsule, the Licaps® dosage form offers the key product selling points in a creative and unique way that appeals to consumers.

Capsugel® is the oldest and largest manufacturer of two-piece hardshell capsules in the world. With 125 years of expertise and nine facilities worldwide, dietary supplement manufacturers can be confident in Capsugel®’s commitment to quality and customer service. Licaps® are produced to the same exacting standards and GMP’s that all Capsugel® products meet.
