Why parents love Serenity Kids' organic, palate-expanding product line

Serenity Kids serenity kids savory toddler bone broth food
In a world rife with sugar-laden baby food products, Serenity Kids gives wellness-minded parents the opportunity to feed their kids savory pouches that are filled with healthy fats, grass-fed meat and a variety of vegetables.

The days of sugar-induced toddler meltdowns are over.

More baby food companies are realizing the importance of getting little humans accustomed to the wide range of flavors they're expected to embrace as they get older, and Serenity Kids is a prime example of this movement. Today's busy parents often don't have the time to concoct organic baby meals from scratch, so these brands give them the convenience they want while not skimping on nutrient density or flavor profiles.

Learn more about Serenity Kids' philosophy when it comes to feeding young bodies ethically and in a way that primes them for healthy growth below.

How does Serenity Kids’ product line differ from conventional baby food on the market?

Serenity Kids is fruit-free! We’re the only high-fat, low-sugar baby food made to mimic the nutrients of breast milk using ethically sourced meats and organic vegetables. We care not just about what you feed your baby, but how that food impacts the world. Our meats come from animals raised on pastures of small American family farms that practice regenerative techniques that improve the soil, reduce run off and sequester carbon. These animals live in a way most similar to how they would have lived in the wild, and are never given GMO feed, antibiotics, added hormones or pesticides.

Furthermore, our products all taste savory and taste good! Babies ages 6-18 months are developing their palate preferences that can determine how they eat later in life. Getting babies to enjoy savory flavors at a young age helps reduce their risk of sugar addiction and obesity. We want to set them up for success by using ingredients that taste great and are high in easily digestible protein. We add fats like organic avocado oil and olive oil to improve absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and to boost brain development.

What are today’s parents most focused on when it comes to ingredients in their kids’ food?

Low sugar, good nutrition and transparent sourcing! We surveyed our audience and these are the first items that come up every single time.

The 2020 to 2025 Dietary Guidelines recommendations released by the Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Agriculture also agree. We’re starting to see more and more education around this and are happy to be leading the industry with products that are specifically made to be higher in healthy fats and low in sugar, even fruit sugars. Introducing infants to a wide range of flavors before 12 months of age sets them up for a lifetime of more varied eating.

The opposite is also true. If your baby only eats sweet foods like fruit purees, they will tend to dislike sour, salty, bitter or umami flavors. Parents are coming to understand that sugar is highly addictive and kids who only like sweet flavors have a higher likelihood of becoming obese or diabetic. All parents understand the connection between sugar and behavioral issues like the famous toddler meltdown, and many are actively seeking lower sugar foods.

How does the way these products’ ingredients are sourced affect their nutritional value? Explain the importance of incorporating animal proteins that are grass fed, free range, organic or wild caught.

While any meat is generally better than no meat, not all meat is created equal. Studies have proven that meats from grass-fed and pasture-raised animals contain substantially more nutrition than grain fed. Pasture-raised meat is higher in omega-3 fatty acids, CLAs, vitamin E, iron, beta-carotene and antioxidants such as glutathione and catalase, when compared to conventional meat. When animals are treated well and fed nutrient-dense foods, they lead healthier and happier lives. It makes sense that if animals eat the diet nature intended for them, then their meat will have the nutrition nature intended for us.

Could you expand on Serenity Kids' partnership with TerraCycle?

Initially, we were not happy that most baby food is packaged in single-use plastic pouches rather than recyclable glass jars. But it turns out that thin, flexible packaging creates a much smaller carbon footprint when compared to glass jars. That's because the pouches are smaller in size and weight, which requires less fuel to transport. After conducting a lot of research on the subject, we found that it actually takes nine times more fossil fuel to transport a glass jar versus a pouch!

Additionally, we found that only 33% of recyclable materials actually get recycled, which means the vast majority of those jars get thrown away. Jars that end up in landfills take 26 times more space than pouches. Because of this and for their convenience, we chose to use pouches and to partner with TerraCycle. TerraCycle sends envelopes to our customers who mail in their used pouches for free, which then get turned into things like park benches and flower pots. By sending your used pouches to TerraCycle, you’re not only diverting them from landfills, you’re enabling the production of new recycled and upcycled products!
