Let’s face it – most aging men need help, especially in the bedroom. Given the expense and side effects of pharmaceuticals, natural alternatives for sexual health have long been a promising market. NBJ estimates the market will grow to $905 million by 2020. We spoke with Suzanne McNeary, president and cofounder of NutraGenesis, and Amandine Moco De Sa, business manager for the nutrition and health market at Naturex.
Fi: What is the outlook for the Men’s Health sector in the near future?
SM: By the year 2015 people aged 50 and older will represent 45 percent of the U.S. population. In fact, an American turns 50 every 7 seconds – 12,500 people every day. And baby boomers outspend other generations by an estimated $400 billion on consumer goods and services.
AMDS: Sexual health is a major market in this category. Euromonitor International estimates the U.S. sexual health market at $85.7 million in 2012, making it the second biggest following Russia.
Fi: Do you see India playing a big part in this market in the future?
SM: Absolutely. With the rich history of Ayurvedic medicine and all of the beneficial Ayurvedic botanicals with their adaptogenic and anti-aging properties, I believe the industry will be looking to India more and more for new nutraceutical discoveries.
Fi: Given the popularity of pharmaceuticals for ED, is there untapped potential here for more Ayurvedics?
SM: Ayurvedics have been used for thousands of years for both men and women’s sexual health. Ashwagandha, from which Sensoril is derived, is a classic for men’s sexual health. In Ayurvedic medicine it is used for enhancing vigor and sexual stamina. Then there is amla, also known as Indian Gooseberry. We sell a multi-patented, clinically tested amla called Capros. Amla is an adaptogen and its name in Sanskrit means “the sustainer.” Shilajit is used in Ayurvedic medicine to enhance virility, and as per traditional Ayurvedic practice it is used in combination with Ashwagandha specifically for this purpose.
We combine Ashwagandha and Cissus bioactives in a proprietary blend in ZTEN, which provides resistance to stress to optimize healthy sexual function, helps promote healthy weight management through triple-action dietary fat and starch blocking, increases energy, enhances cognitive function and vitality, and promotes metabolic wellness through support of cardiovascular health and blood sugar balance.
Fi: How do you see public awareness in North America about maca?
AMDS: Work conducted by Naturex over the past 15 years has helped to transform maca from an unknown herbal product to a well-established herbal product in the US and other countries.
Also, maca’s success has brought greater prosperity to the people of the Ninacaca region in the central Peruvian Highlands, where we source our maca.
Fi: Any new, exciting science here?
