Health Canada approves Denomega products for use in Food and Beverages

(March 20 2007) Denomega Nutritional Oils announced today that its taste and odor free Omega-3 products are approved by Health Canada for use in most foods.

The approval allows for use of the ingredient up to Health Canada’s general guidance limit at 100 mg combined DHA and EPA Omega-3 per serving food.

“The formal approval is important for our prospective customers in Canada”, says Thomas Grys, Denomega’s CEO. “Denomega 100 products are already in use in over 50 commercial food products around the world and offer the market a taste free, safe and cost effective solution to add these healthy nutrients to people’s diet without impacting taste”.

Denomega 100 may, as long as its additives are permitted in division 16 of the Regulations, also be sold in its microencapsulated versions of the oil. “This enables usage in Canadian food products that has never been possible to fortify with DHA and EPA Omega-3 before, particularly shelf stable solutions requiring more than 6 months shelf life”, continues Jan Haakonsen, VP Sales and Marketing.

DHA and EPA omega-3 are long chain omega-3 fatty acids and are commonly referred to as “good fats”. They are essential nutrients and support a healthy life style. Although they have a solid and growing scientific and medical following, most people have a very deficient intake of these “good fats”. Denomega Nutritional Oils provides food and supplement manufacturers a taste and odor free Omega-3 solutions, rich in EPA and DHA, to help them meet consumers increased demand and intake of these essential fatty acids.

Denomega Nutritional Oils is a leading player in Omega-3 products and has several production facilities in Norway. The company is part of Borregaard Ingredients, which has global niche positions within vanillin products, yeast and yeast extracts and Omega-3 products. Borregaard is an international company with strong positions within specialty products based on natural raw materials as well as niches within fine chemicals for the pharmaceutical industry. Borregaard expects revenues in 2007 of approximately USD 800 million.
