Sports and energy drinks going strong

According to the 2009 U.S. Sports Nutrition and Weight-Loss Report from Nutrition Business Journal, sports and energy drink sales made up 51 percent of the SNWL market's $19.6 billion in sales for 2007.

The report analyzes six NBJ-defined sports nutrition and weight loss categories: Sports/energy beverages, weight loss pills, sports nutrition supplements, nutrition bars, weight loss meal replacement supplements and low-carb foods.

Sports nutrition supplements were the second largest sales category with 13 percent, followed by nutrition bars and weight loss meal supplements with 11 percent, weight loss pill-form supplements with eight percent each, and low-carb foods with six percent.
