BENEO has launched a major initiative in its ongoing mission to make its organizational expertise more accessible to the global food and beverage industries. Called the BENEO-Institute, it is a resource which is directly committed to promoting innovation and excellence in the use of functional food and beverage ingredients.
Bringing together BENEO's far-ranging knowledge and capabilities from within its Nutrition Science, Regulatory Affairs and Nutrition Communication departments and extending across the full array of BENEO ingredients, the BENEO-Institute’s overall objective is to help its clienteles of food and beverage manufacturers find innovative solutions and develop new products which provide nutrition and health benefits substantiated by nutritional science.
The BENEO-Institute is working with an international network of scientists from universities, research institutes and food industry partners. It provides BENEOs customers important and timely information that is vital to the efficiency and success of new product development. As it has for decades, BENEO continues to make substantial investments in top-quality nutritional research to extend the knowledge base related to its functional food ingredients and the added value they offer to consumers. The BENEO-Institute was founded and developed by experts coming from different scientific backgrounds such as biology, bio-chemistry, food chemistry, food science, food technology, bio-engineering and nutritional science.
The BENEO-Institute's research and communication efforts are focused on nutritional topics that are pertinent to consumer health and well-being on a global basis, including:
o Weight and energy management
o Digestive health
o Dental health and bone health
o Physical and mental performance
o Low glycemic products
The legislative and regulatory environment related to food and beverage product labelling has become a highly complex subject in many countries so that guidance and help from experts is valuable. The BENEO-Institute takes an active role in monitoring and commenting on the regulatory framework for BENEO’s ingredients to safeguard their use for the industry.
According to Anke Sentko, Vice President Nutrition Communication and Regulatory Affairs of BENEO, “It’s particularly important for food manufacturers to have access to reliable information about the ingredients used where a resulting claim is concerned. In our opinion, the key skills required by a food ingredient supplier include not only profound knowledge of process technology but increasingly of the composition of foods, their role in metabolism and their physiological effects as well as food legislation, regulations and claims, because expertise and experience in this area allow product development to continue at a rapid pace in spite of increased complexity.”
The BENEO product portfolio consists of functional ingredients with nutritional and technical advantages, derived from chicory roots, beet sugar and rice. BENEO is the ideal partner to help improve the health (weight management, energy for mental & physical performance, digestive, bone and dental health), taste, texture and nutritional value (fat and sugar replacement/fibre enrichment) of a product. Through a unique chain of expertise, including the BENEO-Institute, BENEO actively supports (industry partners in) the development of more balanced and healthy food products.
BENEO is a division of the Südzucker Group, employs almost 900 people and has production units in Belgium, Chile, Germany and Italy.
