Canadian Leader in Nutritional Fiber Technology Launches in U.S.

Cevena Bioproducts to aggressively market innovative branded products to North American manufacturers

CHICAGO—As consumer and industry focus shifts toward whole grain fiber and heart health, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada-based Cevena Bioproducts, Inc. has launched its U.S. Business Development program in Chicago. Their targets are dietary supplement and functional food companies looking to provide effective, proven fiber-based products to health-conscious consumers.

In tandem with this announcement, Kimmo Lucas, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cevena Bioproducts, has announced the U.S. efforts will be under the leadership of Richard Staack, Ph.D., M.B.A., a renowned nutritional biochemist in the nutraceutical field. “There is a major progression in the dietary supplement and functional food marketplace in response to continued research on diet and health, and consumer requirements. We feel the time is perfect to expand our international operations and bring our innovative well-researched ingredient, ViscofiberTM, a high beta glucan concentrate to the U.S. nutraceutical industry,” Lucas states. “In addition, we are extremely confident in the leadership abilities of Dr. Richard Staack, who has a proven track record of marrying research with sales strategies.”

With 16 years of executive, operations, product development, and research experience in the nutraceutical and functional food industry, Dr. Staack was most recently Vice President of Business Development, Technology & Science for SourceOne Global Partners™, where he helped launch Sytrinol™ to the supplement and functional food marketplace for cardiovascular wellness products. Dr. Staack also has held positions as Business Development Manager for Cognis Nutrition & Health, Assistant Director of the Human Nutrition Research Program for NCBA, and as a Senior Food Scientist for several global food companies.

Dr. Staack received his Masters of Science and Doctorate in Nutritional and Biochemical Toxicology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, specializing in anti-carcinogenic properties of functional food components. He received his Masters of Business Administration with Distinction from DeVry University. He has received several honors in the field of nutrition and functional foods including fellowship and environmental toxicology scholar awards. Additionally, he has published several articles on nutrition and toxicology in peer-reviewed journals and written numerous nutritional articles for trade and consumer publications.
