MINNEAPOLIS – Cargill Health & Food Technologies (H&FT) and The Coca-Cola Company will jointly present an educational session entitled “Health & Wellness Product Development – A Case Study” at the upcoming BevExpo 2004 to be held Sept. 29 through Oct. 1, 2004 at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, Fla. The session will focus on the development of Minute Maid® Premium Heart Wise™ orange juice with CoroWise™ plant sterols. Minute Maid Premium Heart Wise orange juice was launched in late 2003 and is the first orange juice clinically proven to help reduce cholesterol.
Utilizing Cargill’s CoroWise™ cholesterol-reducing plant sterols ingredient, Coca-Cola reinforced its category leadership in health and wellness innovation by introducing one of the most important new product offerings since calcium fortified orange juice was introduced to consumers in 1986.
In a recent clinical study conducted by researchers at University of California, Davis Medical School, participants significantly lowered their LDL cholesterol by drinking one 8-fluid ounce serving of Minute Maid Premium Heart Wise orange juice with CoroWise™ plant sterols twice daily with meals for eight weeks. Benefits of Heart Wise were demonstrated in men and women with normal and borderline high total cholesterol.
Speakers Steve Snyder, vice president, sales and marketing, Cargill Health & Food Technologies, and John Roddey, innovation director for juices, teas and emerging brands for Coca-Cola North America, will review how these two companies worked together to solve product development and regulatory hurdles, capitalizing on consumer trends and insights to launch a successful mainstream functional beverage. The CoroWise™ plant sterols brand logo appears on the orange juice package to help consumers recognize it as a heart healthy ingredient.
