Cargill Presents Innovative Joint Health Beverage Solutions at BevTech ‘05

MINNEAPOLIS – Cargill recently presented beverage industry professionals with innovative ideas for using its OptaFlex™ natural chondroitin to satisfy the growing consumer demand for joint health products. The well-received presentation, entitled Joint Health Solutions in Beverage Applications, was made at BevTech ’05, the 53rd annual meeting of the International Society of Beverage Technologists (ISBT), April 11-12, in Orlando, Fla. ISBT is a global, not-for-profit technical society of beverage professionals.

The presentation by Paul Paslaski, market development director for Cargill Health & Food Technologies, Pam Stauffer, marketing programs manager for Cargill Health & Food Technologies and Janice Johnson, PhD and senior scientist for Cargill Health & Food Technologies, provided an overview of the opportunity for marketing joint health beverage solutions and proprietary consumer marketing research used to develop the product’s positioning.

Chondroitin is commonly used to help promote healthy joints. Cargill’s OptaFlex™ natural chondroitin is a proprietary form of chondroitin sulfate that is produced using a water-based process. The self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) ingredient is 100 percent water soluble and intended for use in beverages and other food applications.

“Consumers are becoming better educated about functional food ingredients,” said Steve Snyder, vice president of sales and marketing, Cargill Health & Food Technologies. “They want products that not only work well but that also taste great. OptaFlex™ natural chondroitin offers the flexibility that will allow beverage manufacturers to bring such products to the marketplace.”

“Cargill’s presentation to the ISBT highlighted our concept beverage, JointWise™, which contains OptaFlex™ chondroitin,” said Ted Ziemann, president of Cargill Health & Food Technologies. “We have since worked with customers to use this technology to enable a successful commercial product. Another example of how Cargill brings to life its way of doing business with customers - collaborate, create, succeed.”
