Kemin Foods has appointed Ron Thielenhaus as director of operations for its US-based production of FloraGLO lutein, along with Amy Cone, who has been promoted to director of marketing of this branded ingredient. Thielenhaus, previously a plant manager for Baxter Healthcare, will oversee manufacture and distribution, safety, eng-ineering and maintenance. Cone previously served as vitamin and dietary supplements manager for FloraGLO Lutein. In her new role, Cone will oversee planning and sales support for FloraGLO Lutein.
Colloïdes Gets Certified
France-based Colloïdes Naturels International (CNI) has been certified ISO 9001 (version 2000). Already certified ISO 9002 since 1995, CNI has maintained its efforts to develop its quality management programme to offer customer guarantees regarding the control of production techniques and the traceability of raw materials. To do so, CNI invested )10.6 million on its production plant in 2001 and the new certification now covers all CNI activity, from concept to marketing and sales of Colloïdes Naturels.
Lonza Fortifies With Niacinamide Plant In China
Swiss company Lonza Group is strengthening its position in the vitamin B3 market with construction of a new niacinamide plant at its Guangzhou site in China. The $30 million plant comes in response to increasing demand for niacinamide, the company says. The new plant will have a 6,000-ton annual capacity with 9,000-ton expansion capabilities. Production start-up is expected in March 2005. Niacin and niacinamide, naturally present in various foods, are essential precursors for the synthesis of the coenzymes NAD and NADP, which are necessary for several metabolic processes. They are generally added to supplements and foods, especially to flours with poor nutrient bioavailability.
Thomas Named Managing Director
Dr Lutz Thomas has been named managing director of Amino Bioproducts (AMBIO), the joint venture between AMINO GmbH and SA Bioproducts that will develop and produce specialty amino acids for the global marketplace. Thomas brings extensive industry and academic experience to this position, having marketed functional ingredients to the dietary supplements industry at Merck in Germany.
Cargill Gets Rights
Cargill Health & Food Technologies and Hayashibara have negotiated rights to the European marketplace for trehalose, positioning Cargill as the sole distributor of trehalose in Europe. Cargill also has exclusive rights to sell its Ascend brand of trehalose (also produced with Hayashibara technology) in North, South and Central America. The product is marketed for its ability to stabilise proteins and enhance flavours.
Fortitech Acquires Premix
Fortitech has agreed to acquire Ashland Distribution Company's nutritional premix blending business, located in Fontana, California. Fortitech says the acquisition is a milestone for its North American expansion efforts, amplifying its capabilities with a manufacturing, sales and distribution centre on the West Coast. Fortitech claims to be the only international company exclusively dedicated to premix manufacturing, which led to a world-wide joint venture with BASF for the manufacture, marketing and sales of human nutrition premix products.
Glanbia Heads Southwest
Following negotiations with Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) and Select Milk Producers, Glanbia plans to build a $170 million cheese and whey products production facility in the US West Texas/New Mexico region. The new plant, expected to be commissioned in 2005, will be 50 per cent Glanbia-owned and the balance jointly owned by DFA and Select. The new facility could generate annual sales up to $340 million. Glanbia will have full responsibility for operations, sales and marketing.

Food & Health Specialties is the newly formed business group of the Stephan Company, designed to enhance its services within the food industry with an expanded product line and dedicated sales, marketing and technical resources. Stephan is the supplier of Neobee medium chain triglycerides.
