Degussa Food Ingredients launches new product for blood glucose management at Health Ingredients Europe

After successful completion of a controlled human clinical trial, Degussa Food Ingredients will launch a new product in Europe, North America and Asia to address two rapidly growing health concerns: the rising number of overweight and obese people and the related rise in people with unbalanced blood glucose conditions.

"The high fibre content of our new product helps to maintain a healthy gut flora which is a clear benefit for people who care for a blood glucose regulation in pre-diabetic conditions beyond a sole body weight reduction" said Dr. Karl-Heinz Zirzow, Marketing Director Health & Nutrition with Degussa Food Ingredients.

Degussa Food Ingredients developed a new double-fermented wheat fibre product having a defined low glycemic index (GI). Recent studies suggest several benefits of consuming carbohydrates with a low GI, including weight reduction and blood glucose management. In addition to the effects of Degussa's new natural product on body weight and relevant parameter of blood glucose management (HOMA-Index, fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin), the effects on blood lipids were tested in comparison to a leading commercial meal replacement product in overweight pre-diabetics (Body Mass Index >29).

The consumption of Degussa's new product resulted in significant body weight reduction and improvement of blood glucose parameters (publication under preparation).

"The studied low GI product avoids the rapid rise of insulin usually triggered by the uptake of easily absorbable carbohydrates. Those carbohydrates are an additional burden for the affected glucose metabolism leading to reduced insulin sensitivity and early forms of diabetes type II" said Dr. Heike tom Dieck, Manager Nutritional Science with Degussa Food Ingredients. "The additional significant improvement of blood lipids such as triglycerides and cholesterol levels completes the health benefits of our new product" added Dr. Ralf Jäger, Manager Strategic Projects with Degussa Food Ingredients.

The double-fermented wheat product will be offered as a powder blend, as tablets (fortified with all essential nutrients) or as a functional food ingredient for beverages, dairy and dessert-type products.
