DENVER, July 10 /PRNewswire/ -- VitaCube Systems, Inc., a provider of high-end nutritional products, announced today that Mike Shanahan, Executive Vice President of Football Operations and Head Coach of the two-time world champion Denver Broncos, has joined the fast-growing company as an equity owner, special advisor and member of its board of directors.
Mr. Shanahan, who has personally used VitaCube products for more than two years, will actively participate in the privately held company's development and national expansion while also serving as spokesman in advertisements and personal appearances. The company did not disclose terms of the multi-year relationship.
Founded in response to growing concerns about nutritional supplements industry practices, VitaCube is unique because it manufactures its products to meet strict pharmaceutical standards and refuses to market or incorporate potentially harmful substances such as creatine, ephedra, Ma Huang or any other stimulants into its formulations. Last year the NFL cited increasing evidence of health risks when it banned players from using ephedra, a popular herbal supplement contained in some 200 products used for weight loss, building muscle or boosting energy.
The commitment to product integrity, safety and the legitimate health needs of consumers has quietly earned VitaCube Systems an impressive and expanding roster of professional coaches, trainers and athletes including World Series MVP Curt Schilling, Colorado Rockies National League MVP Larry Walker, Green Bay Packers strength coach Barry Rubin, and Tim Grover, a personal trainer whose NBA clients include Michael Jordan.
Mr. Shanahan was most recently voted the NFL's best head coach in a poll of 30 head coaches conducted by CBS.Sportsline.com analyst Jay Glazer. Since joining the Denver Broncos in 1995, Mr. Shanahan has won more games over those seven seasons than any other NFL head coach. The Broncos won back-to-back Super Bowl championships in 1997 and 1998. During his NFL career, Mr. Shanahan has been part of teams that have played in nine AFC or NFC championship games in addition to six Super Bowl appearances.
In making the announcement, VitaCube Systems and Mr. Shanahan jointly issued these statements:
Statement from Mike Shanahan, Executive Vice President of Football Operations and Head Coach of the Denver Broncos: "I have seen first-hand the explosion of supplements in the locker room and consumer marketplace, and I believe that VitaCube Systems is filling a real need for integrity and accountable quality.
"Despite the profits that other companies make selling stimulants and other potentially dangerous products, VitaCube decided from the onset that it would raise the bar in the nutritional supplements industry by selling only safe products manufactured to pharmaceutical standards. This is a company that is being defined by what it won't do in an industry full of bad products and marketing hype, and that's why it has generated so much loyalty among professional athletes and others who understand the benefits of legitimate, effective nutritional supplementation programs.
"I want people to understand that I did not make this commitment lightly. After using VitaCube products for more than two years and seeing the company's commitment to doing what's best for its customers, I decided to become a member of the team. I am tremendously enthusiastic about this venture and look forward to using my experience and exposure to help make VitaCube an industry leader. And hopefully we'll change the industry for the better as well."
Statement from Sandy Greenberg, CEO of VitaCube Systems, Inc.: "It is an honor to have one of the nation's most respected sports professionals make such a meaningful contribution to helping achieve VitaCube's vision. Mike Shanahan could easily choose to endorse or invest in any of the dozens of national brand-name supplements companies out there. Given his reputation and history, Mike's decision to be actively involved as an equity owner, advisor, board director and spokesman underscores his confidence in VitaCube's commitment to high quality, business ethics and the health needs of our customers."
