Enzymotec’s CardiaBeat Named NutrAward 2007 Winner

Boulder, Colo. (April 5, 2007)—Enzymotec’s CardiaBeat™ was named as the winner of the NutrAward 2007 for the best new ingredient of 2006. The award was recently announced at the Nutracon™ conference (www.nutraconference.com) and SupplyExpo™ tradeshow (www.supplyexpo.com) in Anaheim, Calif. Both events are produced by Penton’s New Hope Natural Media.

CardiaBeat is a lipid-regulating agent, composed of plant sterol esters of Omega-3 fatty acids in an Omega-3 glyceride matrix. CardiaBeat’s efficacy in reducing CVD risk factors was evaluated in a clinical trial involving healthy human subjects at McGill University in Canada. The ingredient has 4 patents (pending) in the United States where it has already gained GRAS and NDI status. It is also in the final stages of approval as a novel food in the European Union.
CardiaBeat’s maker, Enzymotec is a globally active company, headquartered in Israel, that sells its products to various industrial segments including functional foods, dietary supplements and infant nutrition. Its main focus areas are solutions for improving cognitive functions, reducing CVD risk and providing balanced nutrition for babies and toddlers.
The three other finalists were: Cargill’s Xtend™ Isomaltulose, a slow digestible sugar resulting in a low blood glucose and insulin response that also is “tooth friendly”; AquADEKs™ a vitamin formulation that addresses the problem of nutrient absorption in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients developed by Yasoo Health, Inc. in partnership with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF); and MeadowPure Omega 3 Ultra, a granulated, free-flowing powder of milled flax in combination with either 2.2 percent or 8 percent fish oil created by Pizzey’s Milling.

Now in its 9th year, the NutrAward celebrates innovative, evidence-based health & nutrition ingredients and technologies. Submissions are considered by a selection committee composed of experts from industry and academia. The committee evaluates submissions based on demonstration of excellence in scientific merit, efficacy, market potential, safety, innovation and ability to increase market credibility.

To submit an ingredient, product formulation or technology for the 2008 NutrAward competition, send a write-up, no longer than 10 pages, to [email protected]. Please include any supporting documents within the 10 pages. December 7th, 2007 will be the submission deadline for the best new ingredient of 2007. Finalists will be on display at www.nutraconference.com and registered Nutracon and Supply Expo attendees can vote online for their favorite new ingredient. The winner will be announced at the upcoming Nutracon in Anaheim Calif., March 12-14, 2008.
