Study Claim The interactions between Lactobacillus reuteri and soygerm powder suggest that combining both in fermented milk can have effective probiotic effects.

Published: De Boever P, et al. Combined use of Lactobacillus reuteri and soygerm powder as food supplement. Letters App Microbiology 2001;33:420-4.

Abstract: Researchers at Ghent University in Belgium studied the survival of Lactobacillus reuteri combined with glycodeoxycholic acid, deoxycholic acid (DCA) and soygerm powder. They wanted to know the effect of L. reuteri on the bioavailability of isoflavones present in soygerm powder.

L. reuteri experienced a die-off when adding 2 or 3mmol 1-1 bile salts, with more pronounced effects in the case of DCA. Using a haemolysis test, researchers found that toxicity could be due to membrane damage. When they added 4g 1-1 soygerm powder, the L. reuteri survived and the membrane damage in the haemolysis test decreased. The L. reuteri cleaved beta-glycosidic isoflavones during fermentation of milk supplemented with soygerm powder.

Potential Applications: SoyLife is intended for use in food products, such as breakfast cereals, nutrition bars and powders, drinks and cosmeceuticals. It is specifically designed for menopausal women and for both sexes seeking to enhance cardiovascular and bone health.

Study Claim: Anthocyanins present in 12g Artemis Standardized Elderberry, are absorbed into the bloodstream within four hours of consumption and the original anthocyanins and their metabolites can be identified in urine.

Published: Wu X, et al. Absorption and metabolism of anthocyanins in elderly women after consumption of elderberry or blueberry. J Nutr 2002 Jul;132(7):1865-71.

Abstract: Researchers with the US Department of Agriculture Research Service in Little Rock, Arkansas, gave four elderly women 12g Artemis Standardized Elder-berry containing 720mg anthocyanins (ACN). Another group of six elderly women took 189g lowbush blueberry extract containing 690g ACN. Within four hours of consumption, researchers found the subjects' urine contained two major ACN, cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-sambubioside, as well as four metabolites: peonidin 3-glucoside, peonidin 3-sambubioside, peonidin monoglucuronide and cyanidin-3-glucoside monoglucuronide.

Researchers concluded that in vivo methylation of cyanidin to peonidin and glucuronide conjugate formation occurs within a few hours after humans consume ACN.

Potential Applications: Artemis Standardized Elderberry is available in liquid or powder for use in capsules, tablets and functional foods. and and a pre-formulated gummy confection.
