LycoRed awarded atherosclerosis prevention patent
The United States Office of Patents and Trademarks has granted patent protection to LycoRed, Ltd., Israel, for an important invention in the field of cardiovascular health. The research supporting this patent (US 7,351,746 B2) demonstrates that phytoene and phytofluene alone, together, and in combination with other natural tomato extract carotenoids, effectively inhibit the progression of atherosclerosis by inhibiting the deposition of plaque from oxidized LDL cholesterol. www.lycored.com

Super CitriMax earns patent
InterHealth Nutraceuticals' Super CitriMax has been granted a patent for its ability to promote fat oxidation. No other hydroxycitric acid can make that claim, the company says. In human clinical studies, Super CitriMax significantly increased fat burning, which was demonstrated by the excretion of urinary fat metabolites such as malondialdehyde, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetone. The ingredient contains standardised levels of hydroxycitric acid, an extract from the South Asian fruit Garcinia cambogia, which is bound to essential minerals calcium and potassium. The ingredient is heat stable and highly soluble; it is also tasteless, odourless and colourless in solution.
Cococin earns GRAS status?
Sabinsa received GRAS status for its branded ingredient Cococin, coconut water solids, after an intensive review of safety and toxicology data by an independent panel of scientists assembled by Soni & Associates. This allows Cococin to be used as a nutrient in a variety of foods and beverages such as nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages, frozen dairy, dairy-product analogs, milk products, snack foods, imitation dairy products, chewing gum, instant tea and coffee, and soups.
AIYA earns AIB certification
Headquartered?in Nishio, Japan, with offices in Los Angeles and Vienna, the tea company Aiya America has earned the Superior American Institute of Baking (AIB) certification two years running in 2007 and 2008. AIB certification is awarded to those manufacturers meeting the highest of standards in food processing, food safety and production technologies.
Taming those vitamin E costs
Rising costs of raw materials, energy and transportation are causing an industrywide price hike in vitamin E, but the price of Fenchem's TOCOVET natural-sourced vitamin E in North America has increased at a slower rate than its competitors, the company says. The price rise is about 15 per cent, and applies to TOCOVET natural-source mixed tocopherols (both oil and powder versions), d-alpha tocopherol, and d-alpha tocopheryl acid succinate.
