Responsible Care is a voluntary initiative of the chemical industry, focused on improving performance, communication and accountability. The program currently is practiced in 53 countries through national chemical industry associations and designates the International Council of Chemical Associations to act as the coordinating body. All participants share a common commitment to advancing the safe and secure management of chemical products and processes. Responsible Care commits companies to work together to continuously improve the health, safety and environmental performance of their products and processes. It is a major contribution by the industry in achieving sustainable development.
Based on the original Canadian and American Chemistry Council programs, begun in the 1980s, companies committing to Responsible Care agree to policies for: “measuring and publicly reporting performance; implementing the responsible care security code; applying the modern responsible care management system to achieve and verify results; and obtaining independent certification that a management system is in place and functions according to professional standards.”
Through its participation in Responsible Care, GBI renews its long-standing policy of integrating aspects of environment, safety, hygiene, security and society as these occur within the global chemical industry. The implementation of the Responsible Care standards marks another facet of GBI’s rigorous adherence to quality control, quality assurance and quality management as integral parts of each stage in GBI’s complete production process. All GBI procedures meet the stringent ISO 9001 standards and products are manufactured according to a strict HACCP program. GBI’s manufacturing centers undergo regular and intensive quality-control enhancements to maintain these standards.
The commitment to “Responsible Care” further enhances GBI’s sustainable development campaign, launched years ago with regard to health, safety & environment — and inclusive of ISO14001 certification — has become a key area for continuing progress and performance in line with the intensification of the GBI’s commitments in support of the environment and society as a whole.
