Hansen Natural Reports Record First Quarter Sales and Profits; Net Sales Increase 41.7 percent, Net Income More Than Triples

CORONA, Calif., May 6, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Hansen Natural Corporation (HANS) today reported record financial results, including sharp increases in sales and profits, for the first quarter ended March 31, 2004.

Gross sales for the first quarter increased 39.9 percent to $38.7 million from $27.7 million a year earlier. Net sales for the first quarter increased 41.7 percent to $31.3 million from $22.1 million a year ago. Operating income for the first quarter advanced 232.2 percent to $3.6 million from $1.1 million a year ago. Net income for the first quarter increased 244.9 percent to $2.2 million, or $0.19 per diluted share, from $633,000, or $0.06 per diluted share, last year.

Rodney C. Sacks, chairman and chief executive officer, said the exceptional performance reflected strong consumer demand for Monster Energy(TM) drinks, which were introduced in 2002, and Lo-Carb Monster Energy(TM) drinks, which were introduced in August 2003. Hansen's new Lost(R) Energy drinks in 16 ounce cans, which were introduced in January 2004, as well as increases in sales, primarily of Hansen's natural sodas, Deuce Energy and Energade energy sports drinks, also contributed to the advances.

The sales increase was partially offset primarily by lower sales of energy and functional drinks in 8.3 ounce cans, multi-vitamin juice drinks in aseptic packaging, Diet Red Energy in 8.3 ounce cans, smoothies in cans and bottles, private label sodas and teas, lemonades and juice cocktails.

Gross profit as a percentage of net sales for the quarter increased to 44.4 percent, from 37.6 percent for the comparable 2003 quarter. Selling, general and administrative expense as a percentage of net sales was slightly higher than in the previous year.
