Company also receives ConsumerLab.com certificate of approval
DES MOINES, Iowa (June 15, 2004) – Kemin Foods has attained ISO 9001:2000 certification from the international certification body Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance Ltd (LRQA) for its Des Moines manufacturing facilities and administrative headquarters. The certification specifically involves Kemin Foods operations and quality management system for the design and manufacture of purified lutein as a food, dietary supplement, or personal care ingredient.
ISO 9001:2000 is a leading worldwide standard for auditing and certifying companies’ business processes. The standards are based on customer-driven criteria and documented adherence to those criteria. LRQA is a premiere organization for auditing and certifying companies to the requirements of ISO 9001:2000 standards.
This certification confirms that the company’s Des Moines-based quality management systems in manufacturing, general management, purchasing, engineering, research/development, quality control, marketing and customer support meet the requirements of the international standard. Kemin Foods produces and markets FloraGLO® Lutein, a patented, purified antioxidant ingredient used by scores of nutritional supplement, food and beverage companies worldwide.
“Kemin Foods Des Moines launched this effort because a number of our global manufacturer customers told us ISO 9001:2000 certification was important to them," said Rodney Ausich, Ph.D., president of Kemin Foods. “We believe we’ve taken strong quality management practices at Kemin Foods and made them even better, all for the benefit of our clients. We are proud of this achievement.”
In a separate quality assessment achievement, Kemin Food’s FloraGLO Lutein 20% liquid in corn oil and 5% beadlets have passed testing by ConsumerLab.com through its Raw Material Voluntary Certification Program. The testing assessed the labeled amounts for the materials. Along with testing raw materials, ConsumerLab.com provides independent test results of branded, finished products and information to help consumers and health-care professionals evaluate health, wellness, and nutrition products.
About Kemin Foods and FloraGLO Lutein
Numerous peer-reviewed studies link the important eye-health benefits of the natural antioxidant lutein with reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Newer science also has suggested lutein may promote healthy skin. Sourced from marigold flowers and purified from marigold flower oleoresin, FloraGLO Lutein is the world’s leading patented, purified lutein. Products with FloraGLO Lutein contain the same lutein naturally found in spinach, kale and other green leafy vegetables, as well as eggs.
Lutein, present in many areas of the eye including the macula and lens, appears to filter high-energy blue wavelengths of visible light—from both natural sunlight and indoor light. Lutein also appears to quench free radicals that may lead to oxidative stress that can damage cells in these tissues. Studies indicate that daily intake of 6 mg to 10 mg may be beneficial. Lutein’s light-filtering, antioxidant qualities may help protect the outer and inner layers of skin through use of oral and topical skin-care products.
