Kemin Foods Introduces New Functional Foods Application Center

DES MOINES, IOWA (March 25, 2002) – Kemin Foods, L.C. recently unveiled its new state-of-the-art functional foods application center designed for manufacturing food and beverage prototypes with FloraGLO® lutein and other Kemin Foods ingredients.

The center will allow Kemin scientists to provide information for food technologists interested in adding lutein or other Kemin Foods ingredients to their food and beverage products. Pilot scale prototypes will be produced to examine physical characteristics and processing conditions of various finished products. These prototypes are exposed to rigorous testing conditions to demonstrate the stability of Kemin Foods ingredients.

“As the functional foods industry continues to grow, manufacturers should expect more from their suppliers. This facility is another service Kemin can offer our manufacturing partners to help reduce investments of time and money during the formulation phase,” said Linda Fullmer, research and development section manager at Kemin Foods. “Customers will also be invited to work with us in developing their products and testing the active ingredients using state-of-the-art analytical equipment.”

The facility includes pilot scale equipment, including a pasteurizer, grinder, 20-quart mixer and a two-stage homogenizer, as well as a preparation area designed with stainless steel, molded one-piece cabinets and counters. The preparation area features a mass quantity balance, four cooling units that can be set to various temperatures for stability experiments, and a commercial stove.

“We’ve designed the center and implemented systems to help us exceed all the necessary food safety requirements set forth by the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, as well as the GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices) described by the Food and Drug Administration,” added Fullmer.

The staff of scientists working in the Functional Foods Application Center comes from a wide variety of backgrounds, including chemistry, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, culinary arts and food science.

About Lutein
Lutein (LOO-teen) is a nutrient found predominantly in vegetables, particularly in dark green, leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale. It promotes long-term eye health in two ways. First, lutein acts as a light filter, protecting the eyes from some of the damaging effects of the sun. Lutein’s second function, as an antioxidant, is to protect the eyes from the damaging effects of aging.

Kemin’s FloraGLO® brand lutein is the only lutein product with GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status. This status allows FloraGLO lutein to be added to breakfast and granola bars, energy bars, energy drinks, fruit drinks, fruit juice, meal replacement drinks, mixed vegetable juice, cereals and soy milk.
