Lyc-O-Mato® GRAS Self-Affirmation Opens New Doors for Functional Food Manufacturers

Natural Lyc-O-Mato® adds lycopene to functional foods

June 4, 2003 - LycoRed Natural Products Industries, Ltd.., manufacturer of the world's foremost natural tomato lycopene complex, announced today that Lyc-O-Mato® has been self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) through an independent evaluation by an expert panel. GRAS status opens the doors for this ingredient to be used to fortify foods with lycopene.

Lycopene, the carotenoid that is responsible for the red color of the ripe tomato and the watermelon, is an excellent natural food color. Consequently, LycoRed has submitted a Color Additive Petition (CAP) for Lyc-O-Mato® lycopene-rich tomato oleoresin to the FDA. Expectations are that approval for use of Lyc-O-Mato® as a food colorant will be granted before the end of the year, expanding the marketing opportunities for this unique ingredient.

Lyc-O-Mato® tomato oleoresin contains lycopene plus other beneficial tomato phytonutrients including carotenoids and tocopherols. These phytonutrients act in synergy with lycopene to produce a much sought after antioxidant benefit.
