Natural Lyc-O-Mato® adds lycopene to functional foods
June 4, 2003 - LycoRed Natural Products Industries, Ltd.., manufacturer of the world's foremost natural tomato lycopene complex, announced today that Lyc-O-Mato® has been self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) through an independent evaluation by an expert panel. GRAS status opens the doors for this ingredient to be used to fortify foods with lycopene.
Lycopene, the carotenoid that is responsible for the red color of the ripe tomato and the watermelon, is an excellent natural food color. Consequently, LycoRed has submitted a Color Additive Petition (CAP) for Lyc-O-Mato® lycopene-rich tomato oleoresin to the FDA. Expectations are that approval for use of Lyc-O-Mato® as a food colorant will be granted before the end of the year, expanding the marketing opportunities for this unique ingredient.
Lyc-O-Mato® tomato oleoresin contains lycopene plus other beneficial tomato phytonutrients including carotenoids and tocopherols. These phytonutrients act in synergy with lycopene to produce a much sought after antioxidant benefit. Dr. Zohar Nir, Vice President of Marketing at LycoRed stated, “LycoRed is very excited to bring the only all natural tomato lycopene complex to the food and beverage industry. Food and beverage manufacturers will now at last be able to fortify their products with all the phytonutrients of the tomato, without the water and the sugar.”
Lyc-O-Mato® offers the industry the only natural tomato lycopene ingredient for food use. Food technologists are considering Lyc-O-Mato® as a lycopene source in numerous categories including breads, cereals, beverages and processed meats. Speaking of the upcoming Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Annual Meeting and Food Expo, Dr. Nir stated, “We're looking forward to meeting with food technologists to explore Lyc-O-Mato® applications of interest to them. Only the imagination limits the possibilities. We anticipate a success in the food industry comparable to the success that Lyc-O-Mato® has already seen in the dietary supplement industry in the U.S., and in the food industry in Europe and Japan.”
Lyc-O-Mato® has been clinically tested and found to support prostate, heart and skin health. The role of tomato lycopene in preventing DNA damage is an up and coming area of research. Studies have shown that Lyc-O-Mato® can intervene in the DNA damage cycle, helping to protect DNA from damages that have been identified as causative factors in degenerative disease.
GRAS self affirmation allows LycoRed to at last approach the food industry and roll out the red carpet for this high quality natural tomato lycopene ingredient. Lyc-O-Mato® will be featured at the IFT Annual Meeting and Food Expo in Chicago, IL, July 12 -16, booth 5305.
