New Association Formed To Promote Flax Lignans

Flax Lignan Association Developed to Create Awareness and Advocate Education

Chicago, IL, November 18, 2005 - A new trade organization has been formed to support the science and safety behind standardized flax lignan ingredients. The Flax Lignan Association is dedicated to promoting the health benefits of flax lignans to consumers and health professionals. Additionally, the Flax Lignan Association will promote the responsible labeling and marketing of flax lignan ingredients.

As flax lignan ingredients become more common in the marketplace, the dietary supplement industry needs standardized methods for analyzing and labeling products. Additionally the industry needs a central clearinghouse which can provide sellers of finished products information on health effects and emerging science such as published clinical studies. Without these important resources, the credibility of flax lignans is at risk from unethical ingredient suppliers who either exaggerate the flax lignan content of their products or the associated health benefits.

The Flax Lignan Association was founded by leading standardized flax lignan ingredient producers Acatris Inc., a member of Royal Schouten Group, and Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM). Membership in the Flax Lignan Association is open to other interested, qualified flax lignan manufacturers.

"The formation of this association is vital to standardized flax lignan ingredient producers as more companies enter the flax lignan marketplace," said Laurent Leduc, President, North America Health Division, Acatris. "The Flax Lignan Association will promote the valuable health benefits associated with daily intake of flax lignans, support clinical studies essential to establishing and advancing the benefits of flax lignans, and work collaboratively on developing a central resource for safety data and allergens."

"A primary objective of the Flax Lignan Association will be to help establish a standard of identity for flax lignans as an ingredient - as well as to develop standardized methods of analysis. Furthermore, the Flax Lignan Association will be active in promoting a science based regulatory foundation to support the health benefits and safety of flax lignans", said Steven Furcich, President ADM Natural Health & Nutrition Division. "We look forward to other qualified ingredient manufacturers joining us."

The new Flax Lignan Association is open to membership from industry participants and any manufacturer with a standardized flax lignan ingredient. For more information on the Flax Lignan Association or to join, please contact Laura Keidan Martin at 312-902-5487.
