Florida-based Valensa International has created ChiaMax Omega-3 Milled Whole Grain ingredient, made from a partially defatted Salvia hispanica. A gluten-free product, it can be used in a wide range of applications where low carb, high fibre, high protein and a healthy amount of omega-3s are desired. A typical assay shows that it contains 48g/100g of fibre and 30g/100g of protein, along with 6g/100g ALA omega-3s. The omega-3s are self-stabilized as constituents of the overall product, and can be used even in baking applications where heat and process tolerance are required.
Ayurvedic extract for skin health
NutraGenesis' Sendara 'beauty from within' ingredient is designed to help combat the internal and external causes of ageing skin. It contains two multi-patented Ayurvedic extracts: the superfruit Indian gooseberry (Amla) and Ashwagandha. Sendara's proprietary formula boosts resistance to premature ageing by preventing free-radical damage to the dermal extracellular matrix, and reducing stress-related hormone levels, NutraGenesis says. Clinically proven in in vivo and in vitro models, Sendara features substantiated structure/function claims for skin/anti-ageing, stress reduction, sun protection, inflammatory response and multi-mechanism antioxidant action.

Natural hibiscus extract
A new natural hibiscus extract by Chr Hansen gives a bright red colour to beverages and provides a standardised anthocyanin content. According to the company, the number of hibiscus-containing products launched since 2005 in Asia has doubled. Almost 500 new products were launched in the region in 2007. Anthocyanins have been found to help reduce the risk of cancer, neurological diseases, and reduce the signs of ageing, among other conditions. However, the company is not marketing the extract as an ingredient, which would allow product health claims. Chr Hansen sources its hibiscus from Africa. The extract is produced using a gentle water-extraction process.
