Xylitol tooth gel
Xlear, a maker of products containing the natural sweetener xylitol, has released an infant tooth and gum gel that helps fight cavities. Infant Tooth Gel joins the Utah company?s Spry Dental Defense System product line, which studies have shown can reduce cavities by as much as 80 per cent, the company reports. In a xylitol-rich environment, bacteria lose their ability to stick to each other and to teeth, which prevents plaque build-up. Xylitol is manufactured from birch trees, cane bagasse and corn cobs.

Green tea to chew
NutriSystem has introduced the first gum and mint products containing the benefits of green tea. Two pieces of T-Green Gum or T-Green Mints (at one calorie a piece) provide the same benefits as drinking a cup of green tea, the weight-loss company reports.

Drink line adds fat-reducing CLA
Cognis Nutrition and Health?s Tonalin brand of conjugated linolenic acid has been introduced in food — in a new line from the Spanish dairy company CAPSA. Called Naturlinea, the line includes a milk and an orange juice-milk blend.
Tonalin recently received self-affirmed GRAS status and was proven to reduce body fat in overweight adults by up to 9 per cent in a study recently published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Amino acids out of China
A maker of herbal products, food additives, vitamins and prohormones, Waseta International in Shanghai has expanded its line of amino acids. Among the new ingredient offerings are L-arginine monohydrochloride, L-carnitine base, L-citrulline malate and L-glutamine alpha ketoglutamate.

Super-charged vitamin E
BASF?s new Vitamin E Acetate 500 is designed to disperse more rapidly without stirring; be unaffected by humidity, thus eliminating caking; and contains more active ingredient (50 per cent) than the 15 per cent typically found in other vitamin E powders, the company says. The powder is also GMO-free and hypoallergenic.

Non-GM soy isolates reach UK
A llchem International?s Food Division is offering a range of IP non-GM soy protein isolates to the UK market. Manufactured by The Solae Company in the US, the isolates are a low-carbohydrate protein source that can be used in a variety of products, with both calcium-enriched and dispersible varieties available. A new kind of egg that promises to deliver more than 17 times the level of omega-3s in regular eggs has reached major grocers in the US. Christopher Eggs contain 600mg of omega-3s per egg, thanks to a patented diet fed to the hens, the North Carolina company reports.

Pre-sprouted barley fuels super food
A ?super food? based on activated pre-sprouted barley grown in northern Sweden has been proven to assist weight loss, assist in DNA repair and combat ageing, says its maker, SuperFood, of the UK. The product, also called SuperFood, is 11 per cent protein, and has 400 per cent more available energy than normal barley, the company reports. Other key nutrients include flaxseed, quinoa, organic fruits and vegetables, turmeric, kelp and spirulina, and ginkgo biloba. Sold as a powder, it can be mixed with fruit juices or other beverages.

Drinkable meals for diabetics
Florida company Victus has added a strawberry flavour to its line of meal-replacement drinks for diabetics. Enterex Diabetic is free of sugar, fructose, saccharin, aspartame, lactose and gluten; contains 14.3g of fibre to help delay glucose absorption in the small intestine; and is rich in antioxidants. An abstract published in JPEN showed Enterex Diabetic lowers glucose levels and helps correct insulin response. The product line has recently reached Walgreens stores across the US.

Concentrated olive polyphenol
Spanish Genosa has developed an olive polyphenol purported to be the most concentrated form available. Their brand of hydroxytyrosol, called Hytolive, is more than 99.5 per cent pure due to a patented manufacturing process, the Malaga firm says. Two Spanish companies are working on the first products to contain the ingredient, which is neutral in taste and offered in a range of forms, from powders to fat-soluble variants.
