Nutrient-rich hemp milk
This month, Living Harvest Hempmilk is reaching grocery store shelves. Living Harvest Hempmilk, an alternative to soy or dairy, is made from pure hemp seeds, and is initially launched in three flavours — original, chocolate and vanilla. The 32oz aseptic containers offer the following nutrients per 8oz serving: a balance of omega-3s and -6s, all 10 essential amino acids; vitamins A, B2, B12, D, E and folic acid; naturally occurring minerals like magnesium, iron, potassium and phosphorus; as well as 46 per cent of the daily recommended dose of calcium. Hemp milk is high in protein, but unlike some of its other alternative dairy counterparts, it does not include enzyme inhibitors or high levels of phytic acid. Based in Oregon, Living Harvest works with organic farmers and farmer co-ops in Canada. The company sells its products through more than 2,000 retailers in Canada, the US and the UK, as well as to private label and bulk accounts.

Hoodia-free weight-loss supplement
Trimspa has created a new product called Metabospa, a Hoodia-free weight-loss supplement containing Metabonex (7-oxo DHEA). This is a thermogenic, clinically proven ingredient, supplied by Humanetics Corp, which promotes weight loss by increasing metabolism without the use of stimulants. The key ingredient, 7-oxo DHEA, enhances the activity of three thermogenic enzymes — Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, Malic Enzyme and Fatty Acyl CoA Oxidase — which promote the burning of body fat, the company says. In two independently conducted clinical trials, Metabonex was shown to promote three times more weight and fat loss than diet and exercise alone. Both trials were double blinded and placebo controlled, and have been published in peer-reviewed journals.

First USDA-certified energy drink
The Healthy Beverage Co in Pennsylvania has unveiled the first USDA Organic and Fair Trade Certified energy drink called Steaz Energy: Organic Fuel for the Mind, Body and Soul. The drink contains organic, fair trade-certified Ceylon green tea from Sri Lanka — a mild stimulant famed for its antioxidant activity. Its other ingredients are organic-sourced Guayaki yerba mate, a plant that contains three times the caffeine content of green tea; and a?ai, the Brazilian fruit from importer Sambazon. Acai contains 33 times the anthocyanin content of red wine grapes, plus omega fatty acids, fibre, amino acids, flavonoids and trace minerals. Unlike all other energy drinks on the market, Steaz Energy is completely food based — it contains no dietary supplements or herbal ingredients such as taurine, glucuronolactone, inositol, L-carnitine, ginkgo or ginseng. All of the ingredients in Steaz Energy are GRAS approved.

Sports-drink line containing PeptoPro
California-based NutriBev Science has launched a line of sports drinks containing PeptoPro, the award-winning protein hydrolysate from DSM Food Specialties. Available in ready-to-drink format, RAD Endurance and RAD Recovery contain 6.25g and 12.5g of PeptoPro protein, respectively, and are designed to be consumed before, during and immediately after exercise. PeptoPro is a casein digestion product consisting of small di- and tri-peptides (two and three amino acids units) that are almost immediately absorbed into the body, considerably faster than whole proteins. RAD protein sports drinks are formulated to rehydrate, as well as provide energy in the form of protein and carbohydrates, supplying electrolytes to replace those lost during exercise. The addition of protein to carbohydrate sports drinks can reduce the biochemical breakdown of muscle tissue to release amino acids needed for glycogen resynthesis that occurs immediately after exercise, NutriBev explains.
