Association Now Represents 9,600 Suppliers and Retail Stores
ANAHEIM, Calif. (March 24, 2006) – The National Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA) announced today that 2005 retail and supply membership in the natural products trade association has once again increased over previous years bringing total members represented to a record 9,600, the highest recorded number of members since the association was founded 70 years ago in 1936.
“NNFA has never been stronger or more influential,” said David Taylor, NNFA’s president. “For 70 years we’ve been able to unite a diverse membership to achieve a common goal: providing healthy and natural products to consumers everywhere. Additionally, the willingness of our members to speak out on public policy issues — and activate their customers to do the same — is a big reason the industry has gained influence on Capitol Hill.”
In the past three years, since the association implemented an aggressive dues restructuring that made retail membership in the association more affordable, NNFA has seen a 110 percent increase in members. In 2005, an additional 394 retail locations joined NNFA bringing the total number of stores represented to 8,725 nationwide. Membership in the supplier category, which includes manufacturers, distributors, publishers, consultants and others, also grew, from 854 to 875. “Despite continued consolidation among our supply members, we’re still seeing growth, albeit more modest than in the retail category,” said Taylor. “A strong annual trade show that delivers the core natural products retail buyers, and where only members can exhibit, is one of the reasons we’ve been able to retain and attract supply members.”
A varied portfolio of benefits for members is another reason NNFA membership has trended upward in recent years. While advocacy is ranked as the number one member benefit by both retailers and suppliers, members also receive discounted rates on liability insurance and credit card processing. In addition, NNFA's FedEx shipping program has saved members more than $800,000 in the last year.
Established in 1936, the National Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA) is the oldest and largest, non-profit trade organization dedicated to protecting and advancing the natural products industry for both retailers and suppliers. The organization represents 9,600 retailers, manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors of natural products, including foods, dietary supplements and health and beauty aids. NNFA unites a diverse membership, from the smallest heath food store to the largest dietary supplement manufacturer.
