The Natural Products Association (NPA) is the leading representative of the dietary supplement industry with over 1,900 members, including suppliers and retailers of vitamins and other dietary supplements. NPA President Jeff Wright comments on the letter sent by Senator Tom Harkin and Senator Orrin Hatch to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Margaret Hamburg:
“The Natural Products Association appreciates the letter by Senators Tom Harkin and Orrin Hatch that calls on the Food and Drug Administration to rewrite the New Dietary Ingredients draft guidance. We agree with them that the FDA should start work on a new draft that is consistent with the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, or DSHEA.”
“Along with the other leading trade associations, NPA has called on the FDA to overhaul the draft NDI guidance. We are grateful that the two principle authors of DSHEA have expressed their concern that the draft guidance could lead to substantial new costs on the industry while providing no additional safety benefits.”
“We stand ready to work with the FDA to help create new guidance consistent with DSHEA that makes sure consumers continue to have access to safe, affordable dietary supplements.”
“NPA invites the industry to visit with senators and representatives as part of Natural Products Day 2012 on March 27. A key focus will be educating legislators about the potential implications of the draft NDI guidance. Find out more and register online at www.NPAinfo.org/NPD12.”
