NPA welcomes dialogue with Sens. Durbin and Blumenthal
Trade association disputes distorted FDA commentary in the Chicago Tribune article.

The Natural Products Association (NPA) is the nation’s largest association representing natural products and the leading representative of the dietary supplement industry. NPA Executive Director and CEO John Shaw responded to a letter sent by Senator Richard Durbin and Senator Richard Blumenthal to the association about Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and the dietary supplement industry. Shaw comments on the letter as well as last week’s story in the Chicago Tribune:

“We are pleased that Senators Durbin and Blumenthal reached out to the Natural Products Association directly to create a working dialogue to address their concerns. Like the senators, we’re concerned any time a violation may be found with a supplement manufacturer and it’s an issue we take seriously.”

“As the nation’s largest association representing the dietary supplement industry, NPA has long been the leader in providing education about good manufacturing practices to inform the industry about their responsibilities under the law. It’s important to emphasize that dietary supplements are part of a fully-regulated industry and good manufacturing practices apply to all supplement manufacturers, large or small.”

“We were surprised about the commentary given by the FDA to the Chicago Tribune last week, especially considering our strong ongoing relationship with the FDA to address related concerns. We look forward to working with our friends in Congress and the administration to further educate them about the multiple benefits NPA members provide to millions of American consumers.”
