NSF International Teams Up with The Herbal Pharmacist Show: New Radio Program Helps Consumers Better Understand Dietary Supplements

ANN ARBOR, Mich - To help consumers make more informed decisions, NSF International today announced that new radio public service announcements (PSA) will be airing around the country to help consumers understand the challenges associated with choosing dietary supplements and functional foods.

There are now more than 30,000 dietary supplements available on the market in the U.S. and 1,000 new ones are added each year-all of which create a bewildering array of choices for the consumer. As a public health and safety resource, the NSF Dietary Supplements and Functional Foods Program has developed informative audio programming in conjunction with The Herbal Pharmacist Show and Dave Foreman, RPh, ND, to help consumers understand what to look for when purchasing dietary supplement products. With a national reach to 35 markets and more than 200,000 listeners nationwide each week, The Herbal Pharmacist Show is uniquely positioned to syndicate this free programming to educate consumers on which health product meets their needs.

Based on information and questions received at the NSF Consumer Affairs Office, these consumer-friendly, 30-second radio spots are designed to answer key questions that help consumers advance their personal health goals. These include:

  • What can consumers do to protect themselves when purchasing a dietary supplement?
  • What types of products are classified as dietary supplements?
  • Do consumers need to check with medical professionals before using a dietary supplement?
  • Are manufacturers required to list all ingredients on the label of a dietary supplement?
  • How does regulation differ between dietary supplements and over-the-counter drugs?

To access these announcements, consumers can visit the NSF International Website at

http://www.nsf.org/consumer/newsroom/psas.asp or they can email questions to info@nsf.org. NSF also offers general information on many other public health and safety issues, such as food safety, water safety, disaster preparedness, getting children interested in handwashing http://www.scrubclub.org and other issues that impact the entire family.

"By working with NSF International on this new public service programming, The Herbal Pharmacist Show can continue to reach out to listeners around the country with the latest, up-to-date public health information from a noted independent dietary supplement certification program," added Dr. Foreman.
