Breakthrough Technology Used in New OatVantage(TM) Ingredient - Most Concentrated Source of Oat Bran Soluble Fiber
DEVON, Pa., Nov 24, 2003-- Nurture, Inc. has been awarded US Patent No. 6,624,3000 for an innovative, aqueous-based technology for concentrating beta-glucan from sources such as oat bran. This marks the latest addition to a series of patents for the process, including US 6,323,338 and 6,485,945. With a higher concentration and lower cost than other methods, the patented process provides oat bran's cholesterol-lowering benefits in a much more convenient, concentrated form for use as a dietary ingredient. The result is the most concentrated, all-natural oat bran ingredient available today, OatVantage(TM) Oat Bran Concentrate. Additional patent cases for Nurture's process are pending in the U.S. and internationally.
OatVantage contains 54 percent beta-glucan by weight, compared with 12 to 20 percent in other concentrated products. It is a versatile ingredient appropriate for encapsulation and tableting, semi-solid and solid foods and beverages, functional foods, nutraceuticals and dietary supplements. OatVantage is water-soluble, providing additional versatility for formulating new products.
"Beta-glucan, which has important cholesterol-lowering benefits, has been largely unavailable as a food additive due to the cost-prohibitive nature of conventional extraction," explains Dr. Richard C. Potter, Chief Science Officer for Nurture, Inc., who led the development of the new technology. "The benefit of this process is that it is entirely aqueous and results in efficient production of beta-glucan concentrates."
Oat Beta-Glucan Can Help Lower Cholesterol
It is well-established that dietary fiber, particularly soluble dietary fiber, is important for good health. Beta-glucan is the soluble dietary fiber in the oat, which scientists have isolated as the "active compound." Dozens of clinical studies conducted over the past forty years have conclusively established that oat beta-glucan significantly reduces LDL and total cholesterol. During digestion, beta-glucan acts as a sponge, soaking up cholesterol and taking it out of the body as waste. This was formally recognized in 1997 by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) with the adoption of the first food specific health claim.
"Until now, it has been difficult to consume amounts of oat beta-glucan sufficient to reliably control cholesterol, because oats typically contain only two to four percent by weight beta-glucan," added Dr. Potter. "However, the 54% beta-glucan content of OatVantage provides a concentrated dosage form, which readily permits consumption of efficacious amounts of beta-glucan."
A Nutritional Solution: New Concentrated OatVantage(TM)
More than 100 million Americans have elevated cholesterol levels. For the 65 million who are "borderline high" (200-239 mg/dL), lifestyle modifications such as diet can play a role in maintaining normal cholesterol levels, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP). The health claim enacted by the FDA recognizes that, "As part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, three grams of oat bran soluble fiber daily may reduce the risk of heart disease."
"The recommended amount of oat soluble fiber requires at least two to three daily servings of oat products, such as cereal," explains Griffith Parker, CEO of Nurture, Inc. "OatVantage offers a new nutritional option to help boost intake of oat soluble fiber."
OatVantage is made from non-GMO oats grown in North America. It is non-allergenic, appropriate for strict vegetarians and certified Kosher. OatVantage is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) and is manufactured under strict Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines.
Nurture, Inc., headquartered in Devon, PA, is a privately held company, which was incorporated in 1992 to focus on developing proprietary extraction technologies for oat grains.
