Omega-3 Fish Oil Ingredients Verified
June 8, 2004 --Rockville, Md. — The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) is pleased to announce that Ocean Nutrition Canada (ONC) is participating in USP’s new Ingredient Verification Program and has earned verification of its line of standard fish oils and omega-3 fish oil concentrates. ONC is the first company to achieve USP verification of ingredients.
USP’s Ingredient Verification Program (USP-IVP) verifies ingredients used in the manufacture of dietary supplements in the United States and around the world. The program verifies ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, botanical extracts, nonbotanical dietary supplements and other substances that are used in the manufacture of dietary supplement products.
“This was an extremely rigorous audit process and demonstrates our continued commitment to being a global leader in the production of pure omega-3 fish oil concentrates,” said Janet Shay, vice president, quality and regulatory affairs at ONC. “We’re extremely proud that our oils have achieved the status of being the first dietary supplement ingredient to be verified by USP’s IVP program.”
Eleven of ONC’s omega-3 fish oil ingredient products underwent the rigorous ingredient verification process of IVP and have successfully earned USP verification.
The USP-IVP process includes:
• Evaluation of a manufacturer’s quality systems through an audit for compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs);
• Review of manufacturing and quality control documents for ingredients submitted for verification;
• Laboratory evaluation of ingredient samples from USP selected lots for compliance with label claim and program requirements;
• Granting of the USP-IVP verification mark; and
• Post-verification surveillance testing of ingredients bearing the USP Verified mark.
“We’re very pleased that ONC has joined USP’s IVP,” said V. Srini Srinivasan, Ph.D., vice president, USP’s Verification Program. “ONC understands the significance of ingredient verification and that it is just as important as verification of the final dietary supplement product. Ingredient verification gives manufacturers greater assurance that the raw materials they are using are of good quality.”
USP also operates the Verification Program for dietary supplements. USP’s verification program responds to the need to help assure the public that dietary supplement products contain the ingredients stated on the product label.
