EAGAN, Minn., Aug 06, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- A new clinical study may offer a solution for people seeking to minimize the severity of health challenges during the cold/flu season.
According to research published recently in The Journal of Applied Research, a natural immune health ingredient called Wellmune WGP(R) reduced the incidence of fever and eliminated the need for study subjects to miss work or school due to colds.
Wellmune WGP is clinically proven to enhance innate immune cells that are the body's first line of defense. Derived from a proprietary strain of Baker's yeast, Wellmune WGP activates white blood cells (neutrophils) to more quickly find and kill foreign challenges.
"The research indicates the potential of Wellmune WGP to naturally enhance the body's immune system to improve overall health and wellness," said Dr. William Sears, renowned pediatrician, author and university professor.
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted last year during the cold/flu season with 40 healthy subjects, aged 18-65. Subjects were treated daily with either Wellmune WGP or a placebo for 90 days. Cold/flu symptoms were evaluated by medical staff within 24 hours of onset.
While there were no significant differences in the incidence of symptomatic respiratory infections among the study groups, the duration and severity of symptoms were alleviated in subjects receiving Wellmune WGP.
In the study results, the Wellmune WGP group reported:
-- No missed work or school due to colds, compared with 1.38 days of work/school missed for the placebo group. (p = 0.026)
-- No incidence of fever, compared with 3.50 incidence in the placebo group. (p = 0.042)
-- An increase in quality of life, including physical energy and emotional well-being, as measured by a clinically validated health survey questionnaire (SF-36v-2). (p = 0.042)
-- No adverse events were detected and no safety concerns were present.
"Most of us cannot afford 'down time,'" said Dr. Michael Murray, one of the world's leading authorities on natural medicine. "Missing work or school, re-arranging schedules and just feeling lousy is inconvenient, to say the least. Wellmune is a simple, natural and safe way to support your family's immune system."
Wellmune WGP is a functional ingredient designed for foods, beverages and dietary supplements. It is currently available in numerous products worldwide, including:
-- Oasis Health Break(R) Immuniforce(TM) from Lassonde, the largest refrigerated juice company in Canada.
-- ImmiFlex(R), a European dietary supplement from CarePharma.
-- Immune Health Basics(R), a U.S. dietary supplement from Biothera.
Other foods, beverages and supplements containing Wellmune WGP are in development with fall launch plans.
The study, entitled "Randomized Phase II Clinical Trials of Wellmune WGP for Immune Support During Cold and Flu Season," was published in Vol. 9, No. 1 & 2 of The Journal of Applied Research. The study was conducted for Biothera by Miami Research Associates, Department of Nutrition and Endocrinology.
