Sabinsa Corporation Receives GRAS Status for its Branded Ingredient Saberry™

Sabinsa Corporation received Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status for its branded superfruit ingredient Saberry™ – Emblica officinalis Gaertn., after a comprehensive review of safety and toxicology data by an independent panel of scientists with international repute assembled by Soni & Associates, Inc.

This self-affirmed GRAS status allows the manufacturer additional freedom to add Saberry™ in a variety of foods and beverages ranging from baked goods to milk products, jams & jellies, gelatins & puddings, soups, snacks, candy, sugar, non-alcoholic beverages and even instant tea and coffee.

“We are excited to introduce Amla to the world market backed by research and processing expertise that brings its applications to a whole new level. Our research efforts established correct biomarkers, and now we can enter the functional food side with certainty of safety for our Saberry ingredient,” stated Shaheen Majeed, Marketing Director.

Saberry™ is a proprietary, patent pending, extract of fruits of Emblica officinalis Gaertn. (synonymous with Phyllanthus emblica), more commonly known as Indian Gooseberry. The fruits of Emblica officinalis known in India as Amla (Sanskrit name Amalaki), are consumed as fruit, or in the form of food products. In the Ayurvedic tradition, Amalaki is regarded as “one of the best rejuvenating herbs.” In modern terminology, Amla is an extraordinary adaptogen.

Conventionally, Amla extracts used in dietary supplements were standardized using ascorbic acid as the biomarker. However, recent research has revealed the fact that Amla does not contain ascorbic acid in consistent amounts, and sometimes only in trace quantities, rendering its validity as a biomarker questionable. Saberry™ is the result of efforts to prepare an authenticated Amla extract, made possible by Sabinsa’s research team developing a new HPLC method for the characterization and analysis of the various constituents of Amla extract. Saberry™ from Sabinsa Corporation is standardized to contain a minimum of 10% -Glucogallin and 50% Gallates. More information is available in Sabinsa’s Saberry White Paper, downloadable from
