PISCATAWAY, NJ, June 27, 2005 -- Sabinsa Corporation, a manufacturer and supplier of high quality herbal extracts, cosmeceuticals, minerals and specialty fine chemicals, has lowered heavy metal limits in its Selenium SeLECT brand L-(+)-Selenomethionine ingredient. New limits for Selenium SeLECT are as follows: less than one part per million (ppm) lead; less than 0.5 ppm arsenic; less than 0.5 ppm cadmium; and less than 0.5 ppm mercury.
"Although Selenium SeLECT has always been well within U.S. Pharmacopeia standards for heavy metal content, we wanted to ensure it exceeded tightening worldwide regulations," stated Todd Norton, president, Sabinsa Corporation. "As Selenium SeLECT continues to be used and sought after by top-level national and international research organizations, we felt it necessary to tighten our product specifications. Based on a comprehensive trend analysis of actual analytical results, we were able to set these extremely low heavy metal limits. In some markets Selenium SeLECT is now considered a pharmaceutical grade ingredient."
Selenium SeLECT, Sabinsa Corporation's branded L-(+)-Selenomethionine compound, has been shown to be more bioavailable, pure and safe than other forms of selenium. Selenium is a trace mineral that is found naturally in soil and has been shown to have several positive health benefits. When consumed, selenium enters the body to form selenoproteins and glutathione, the body¹s antioxidant immune system detoxifier. Currently, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is using Selenium SeLECT for its Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT), a 12-year study focused on the role of selenium and vitamin E, both separately and together, in the prevention of
prostate cancer. Shortly after this study began, the FDA issued a qualified health claim for reducing the risk of certain cancers.
Additionally, NCI is conducting the Prevention of Alzheimer's by Selenium SeLECT and Vitamin E (PREADVISE) trial in conjunction with SELECT. This study is researching the role of selenium and vitamin E in preventing memory damage with age, including Alzheimer's and other diseases that can affect the brain. Selenium SeLECT was chosen for these NCI studies because of its exceptional quality. The worldwide quality standard or USP monograph for selenomethionine is based on Selenium SeLECT.
