Winter Springs, FL, March, 2008 - It was just a short while ago that Core Naturals first introduced Salba® to the United States. In that brief time, the consumer demand for these tiny white seeds has skyrocketed, and scientific recognition for its numerous health benefits continues to grow. Salba is THE richest whole food source of Omega-3 fatty acids and dietary fiber found in nature. one serving of Salba – 12 grams or approximately one heaping Tablespoon – provides over 2,400 mg of Omega-3s, over 4,500 milligrams of dietary fiber, with less than 0.5 net carbohydrates per serving. But what really places Salba in a class all its own is the ongoing scientific research, conducted on the only two registered varieties of Salvia hispanica L that together ARE Salba: Sahi alba 911 and Sahi Alba 912. These are the aspects of Salba that have moved it to where it is today: one of the Three Finalists for the prestigious NutrAward for 2008.
All of the attendees of 2008 Nutracon & Education Day at Supply Expo, get to vote for their choice upon conducting their own review of each company’s submitted presentation at Nutracon: Anaheim Hilton, 2nd floor
HOW THE FINALISTS WERE SELECTED
The three top finalists were chosen by a distinguished panel of key industry experts, scientists, researchers and nutritionists. As reported in Functional Ingredients Magazine, the coveted NutrAward is given every year to “innovative, evidence-based health and nutrition ingredients and products on the basis of scientific merit, efficacy, market potential, safety, innovation, and ability to increase market credibility.” Now in its ninth year, as it has done before, Nutracon’s nominations are considered by a committee of experts from both industry and academia, and then meticulously narrowed down to a short list of ONLY three. The winners will be selected based on a combination of the expert committee’s assessment/valuation of how well the ingredient or product meets the defined criteria, along with the LIVE VOTE by all of the attendees at Nutracon 2008 and Education Day of SupplyExpo 2008. The top three finalists are: 1) Core Naturals for SALBA, 2) Quality of Life, and 3) Kyowa.
CORE NATURALS SALBA: QUALITY CONTROL IS THE KEY TO THESE HEIRLOOM SEEDS
Florida-based Core Naturals, headed by Mitch Propster, is a developer and marketer of premium ingredients for the nutrition, nutraceutical, and functional food markets. Their specialty is in locating and authenticating the latest news in nutritional science and proprietary formulations which respond to the developments in consumer market trends. Propster stated, “It is an honor for us to be acknowledged by the distinguished Nutracon panel as one of the three companies in the natural health industry to be considered for this major annual prize: The 2008 NutrAward for Best New Product."
THE SPIRIT OF SALBA
The first experimental plantings for Salba were started in 1991 in Argentina, by Adolfo and Alfredo Mealla. By
painstakingly sorting out the more nutrient-dense white seeds from the mostly black ones, and then planting and re-planting them, they were able to not only produce a completely white harvest, but they also were able to
significantly enhance the overall nutritional content. Today, Salba is grown under meticulously controlled conditions exclusively in Peru, because of the climate and pristine environment.
Salba is all-natural, has no trans-fat, and is neutral in taste. Salba is Certified Non-GMO, Certified Kosher, Certified Vegan by the American Vegetarian Association, and Certified Gluten-Free by the GFCO (Gluten-Free Certification Organization), whose certification allows Salba to carry their label.
SCIENCE TELLS THE SALBA STORY
The true value of Salba’s exceptional nutritional profile was discovered from research conducted by an expert team, led by Dr. Vladimir Vuksan, PhD, Professor of Endocrinology and Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.
Dr. Vuksan is renowned world-wide for developing novel alternative therapies for obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, and was instrumental in the creation of the term “Glycemic Index.” Dr. Vuksan has conducted clinical studies using Type 2 diabetic patients and healthy individuals. The latest study was published in the prestigious journal, Diabetes Care: “Supplementation of Conventional Therapy with the Novel Grain Salba (Salvia hispanica L.) Improves Major and Emerging Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Type 2 Diabetes.”
