Scientific Study Measures the Effects of Two Selenium Options on Markers of Prostate Cancer

SelenoExcell® High Selenium Enriched Yeast Found to Be Most Effective In Limiting DNA Damage

West Lafayette, IN- September , 2003-A recent study concludes that supplementing your diet with selenium can reduce DNA damage within the prostate, which may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. The study was conducted to determine the effects of dietary selenium supplementation on the fate of DNA damaged cells that accumulate within the aging prostate gland.

David J. Waters, DVM, PhD of the Gerald P. Murphy Cancer Foundation and Purdue University led the research team that studied elderly dogs, the only species besides humans that spontaneously develop prostate cancer with significant frequency. Dogs were randomly assigned to five different groups that differed in their dietary selenium intake. Dogs received an unsupplemented diet (control group) or diets supplemented with varied doses of either selenomethionine or SelenoExcell®, a high selenium enriched yeast manufactured by Cypress Systems in Fresno, Ca.

The dogs were given their respective diets over a seven-month period, then were tested to measure the DNA damage in prostate cells and in peripheral blood lymphocytes by single cell gel electrophoresis. The percentage of cells with extensive DNA damage within the prostate of the control group was 79.1% compared to an average of 57.2% within the selenium-supplemented groups. The group receiving the larger dose of SelenoExcell® had the lowest percentage of cells with extensive DNA damage with 49.1%, which was 10-15% less than those groups receiving selenomethionine and a nearly 40% improvement over the unsupplemented control group.

“The extent of DNA damage within the prostate was significantly lower in the supplemented groups; however, our study indicated that groups given SelenoExcell® had the lowest level of DNA damage. Those groups also had a 5-15% higher tissue concentration of selenium in their heart, liver, skeletal muscle and prostate compared to dogs treated with the equivalent dose of selenomethionine,” stated Dr. Waters. “This reinforces what we already know - our bodies are able to absorb organic minerals such as SelenoExcell® very efficiently, making this form of selenium a readily available source of the cancer-fighting nutrient.”

Selenium supplements have been readily available in various forms since 1975. However, interest in high selenium enriched yeast was heightened in 1996, when the Journal of the American Medical Association published results from Dr. Larry Clark’s Nutritional Prevention of Cancer (NPC) Trial. The published results showed that high selenium enriched yeast cut overall cancer death by 50% and prostate cancer incidence by 63%.

“The human body does not have the capability to produce selenium, it must acquire the necessary dose through diet. Selenium is found in foods such as whole grains, seafood, garlic, eggs and mushrooms; however, due to a wide range of variables it is difficult to determine how much selenium these foods contain,” said Paul Willis, President of Cypress Systems. “That is why doctors frequently recommend taking supplements of selenium as part of your daily regimen. Selenium is most effective in its prevention of prostate cancer and it also may help to prevent colon and lung cancer, but its potential benefits don’t stop there. Selenium has also been found to protect the heart muscle from deterioration, prevent and reduce inflammation such as that experienced with rheumatoid arthritis. It can help energize the body, improves mood, and prevents depression and anxiety.
