USP Announces New Ingredient Verification Program for Dietary Supplements - Inter Farma is First Company to Join

March 31, 2004 --Rockville, Md. — The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) is pleased to announce that Inter Farma S.A. will participate in USP’s new Ingredient Verification Program.

USP’s Ingredient Verification Program (USP-IVP) verifies ingredients used in the manufacture of dietary supplements in the United States and around the world. The program verifies ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, botanical extracts, and nonbotanicals, as well as excipients and other substances that are used as either an active or inactive ingredient in the manufacture of dietary supplement products.

The USP-IVP process includes:
• Evaluation of a manufacturer’s quality systems through an audit for compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs);
• Review of manufacturing and quality control documents for ingredients submitted for verification;
• Laboratory evaluation of ingredient samples from USP selected lots for compliance with label claim and program requirements;
• Granting of the USP-IVP verification mark; and
• Post - verification surveillance testing of ingredients bearing the USP Verified mark.

“IVP is a natural progression of USP’s long history of establishing officially recognized public standards for medicines and dietary supplements,” said V. Srini Srinivasan, Ph.D., vice president, USP’s Verification Program. “Ingredient verification is just as important as verification of the final dietary supplement product. By verifying the ingredients, manufacturers will have better assurance that the raw materials they are using are of good quality.”

USP also operates the Verification Program for dietary supplements. USP’s verification program responds to the need to help assure the public that dietary supplement products contain the ingredients stated on the product label.

Based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Inter Farma S.A. is a producer of dietary supplement ingredients. The company has submitted its chondroitin sulfate materials for verification.
