Straus Family Creamery Organic European Style Butters Receive Whole Foods Market Authentic Food Artisan (AFA) Designation

MARSHALL, CA – Straus Family Creamery, the award-winning California organic dairy and creamery, proudly announces that its Organic European Style Butters have earned the official Authentic Food Artisans (AFA) designation from Whole Foods Market, the world’s largest natural and organic supermarket. Straus Family Creamery Organic Butters will be featured with other top artisanal products as part of the AFA collection in every Whole Foods Market store around the country.

Whole Foods Market's AFA seal is reserved for products of excellence selected by buyers who search the world handpicking products made to exacting standards. AFA products are organic and must be made using the methods traditional to their trade, in small batch production from the finest ingredients. The AFA seal signifies artisan producers' dedication to traditional craftsmanship and to the delicious fruits of that labor of love.

Straus Family Creamery, which operates its own organic dairy, opened its creamery in 1994 bottling milk from its own family farm. Straus milks 270 cows on its own family dairy that overlooks Tomales Bay located on the coast of Northern California. The cool coastal weather is perfect for cows and the sea air helps give grasses and the resulting cream and milk a distinct regional flavor. In addition, Straus also uses milk from two other neighboring organic family farms to make its products.

Offering an alternative to modern-made butter, Straus utilizes methods developed by the famous creameries of the Point Reyes peninsula at the turn of the century by using a rebuilt 1950’s butter churn. Butter is made with just pure sweet cream with no added stabilizers, additives, colorings, cultures or added whey. Made in small batches using 160 gallons of cream to make approximately 450 lbs. of butter, Straus butter has a high 85-86% butterfat content. A higher butterfat content means less moisture, flakier pastries and baked goods that brown more evenly. And in the case of Straus butter, stupendously flavored butter sauces.

Straus European Style Butters come in both Salted (with half the salt of conventional butter) and Sweet (unsalted) varieties. Straus Family Creamery produces a full line of organic dairy products including cream-top milks in glass bottles, European-Style yogurt, cheese and their new Super Premium Ice Cream.
