Her latest: the well-being of the American family. Laurie David likes tackling big issues. She’s a longtime passionate advocate when it comes to raising awareness on the issue of climate change, with a resume to prove it: Producer of the Academy Award–winning film An Inconvenient Truth and other films, and co-author of award-winning books like The Down-to-Earth Guide to Global Warming, written especially for kids. 

The Family DinnerNow she’s taking on another big issue: the wellbeing of the American family. Inspired by her own experience raising two girls (now teenagers), David’s newest book, The Family Dinner: Great Ways to Connect with Your Kids, One Meal at a Time (Hybrid Nation, 2010), is a practical, inspiring gem that every family can benefit from reading.

Chockfull of kid-approved, simple, healthy recipes, the book also guides parents on setting the scene for successful (and green) gatherings; table games guaranteed to foster fun, meaningful communication; tips on getting kids in on the cooking; ways to offer gratitude; and much more.

Over-scheduling and the 24/7 pull of new technology makes connected parenting even harder these days than when she started daily family dinners a decade ago, says David. But research now shows that regular family dinners are linked to better grades, less substance abuse problems, better social adjustment—and healthier eating habits, a boon in the face of our country’s growing child obesity epidemic.
