AIBMR Life Sciences, Inc., a full-service natural and medicinal products research institute, today announced the establishment of the Alexander and Laura Schauss Naturopathic Medicine Research Scholarship, named after AIBMR's founder, Alexander G. Schauss, Ph.D., FACN. AIBMR also announced a monetary donation to California Coast University in Santa Ana, Calif., Dr. Schauss's doctorate alma mater.

Beginning in the 2009 school year, fourth- and fifth-year naturopathic medicine students who plan to pursue research careers after graduating from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, Bastyr University or the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, will be eligible for this scholarship. The scholarship committee is comprised of graduates from the three selected naturopathic medicine schools,
including: Kathleen Jade, ND (committee chair); John Endres, ND; Irfan Qureshi, ND; Amy Clewell, ND; Sara Parent, ND; and Tennille Marx, ND.

Each committee member has worked at AIBMR in various research capacities and is familiar with the institute’s high standards for personnel selection.

"We are pleased to extend this scholarship to the brightest and best naturopathic medicine students, as their future research will strengthen the catalog of science supporting the safety and efficacy of nutraceutical consumer products," stated Dr. Schauss, "It is my hope that the nutraceuticals industry will join AIBMR in contributing to and supporting this effort."

AIBMR's donation to California Coast University (CCU) will go towards re-establishing the institution's doctorate programs. CCU's doctorate admissions were recently closed to better accommodate the school's distance-learning bachelor and master degree programs that are being utilized by students currently deployed with the military.

"As an alumni of CCU's doctorate program, I know first-hand the value of this accredited distance-learning institution of higher education to busy and mobile students," said Dr. Schauss, "CCU's distance- learning program should be available to students at all levels; this donation will support the restart of CCU doctorate programs."

Dr. Schauss' doctoral dissertation at CCU focused on the effect of zinc supplementation on perceptual function in bulimia nervosa patients. Part of his dissertation research appeared in the journal, "Nutrients and Brain Function", as well as two books he subsequently co-authored – "Zinc and Eating Disorders" and "Anorexia and Bulimia."

Alexander G. Schauss, Ph.D., FACN, senior director of natural and medicinal products research for AIBMR Life Sciences, Inc., has held faculty appointments at four institutions of higher learning, including that of associate professor of behavioral sciences, associate professor of research, clinical professor of natural products research and adjunct research clinical professor of botanical medicine.
