Results Show Ingredient Positively Impacts Participants' Overall Quality of Life
BRISBANE, QUEENSLAND, May 3, 2006 - BioLogic Health Solutions Pty Ltd., an Australia-based company whose mission is to research, develop and promote a range of well-researched natural products that improve the quality of people's lives, today announced the results of a two-month clinical trial that confirms that the company's proprietary, all-natural ingredient UroLogic(TM) helps reduce symptoms of overactive bladder and urinary incontinence in men and women.
The two-month randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trial of 73 men and women ages 29 88 years revealed that 85 percent of participants receiving UroLogic demonstrated significant reduction in symptoms including frequency of urination and/or incidence of leakage after two months. Of the participants in the UroLogic group, 70 percent noted an increase in their quality of life as measured by a Urinary Distress Inventory that was administered at the beginning of the study and after one and two months of treatment to gauge physical characteristics such as leakage, frequency of urination, difficulty emptying the bladder and pain. Additionally, 74 percent of participants in the UroLogic group reported an increase in quality of life as measured by a Urinary Health Questionnaire administered throughout the course of the study to determine the effects of urinary incontinence and overactive bladder on everyday activities such as social outings, household chores, physical recreation and travel. Results of this study were recently presented at the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) conference by Alex Schauss, Ph.D., director of natural and medicinal products research, AIBMR Life Sciences.
"This study confirms that UroLogic can help individuals improve bladder function when used over time, but more importantly it shows that it can positively impact an individual's quality of life," stated Debra Seipel, managing director, BioLogic Health Solutions. "Currently, approximately 25 million individuals in the U.S. alone suffer from urinary incontinence and overactive bladder and UroLogic is the first all-natural, clinically tested solution developed specifically to address these issues."
Study participants were either given 1300 mg of UroLogic or a placebo orally twice daily over a period of two months and completed a series of interviews and questionnaires at the beginning of the study and after one and two months of treatment to determine efficacy. Participants were asked about daily frequency of urination, daily frequency of nocturia, weekly frequency of daytime incontinence episodes and weekly frequency of nighttime incontinence episodes. Additionally, they were given a Urinary Health Questionnaire to assess quality of life on a four-point scale for daily activities and to measure the impact of urinary incontinence and overactive bladder on those activities. Participants also completed a Urinary Distress Inventory to measure the impact of physical symptoms such as leakage and urgency on a four-point scale.
The proprietary natural formula in UroLogic contains the Western herb Horsetail, traditionally used to address the symptoms of urinary incontinence, and the Ayurvedic herb Crateva, that assists bladder tone, combined with added minerals to support nerve transmission. Horsetail is a mild diuretic herb with astringent and soothing effects on urinary mucosa.
The effects of horsetail in assisting incontinence and frequency of urination may result from its antispasmodic action, which helps to soothe an irritated bladder sphincter. Crateva nurvala has been used for centuries to maintain bladder health. It has tonic effects on the bladder and assists symptoms of poor bladder tone as well as having been shown to decrease residual urine volume.
