Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are important in our diet and have been shown to provide health benefits across the lifespan. Adequate intakes of DHA and EPA through consumption of either fish/seafood or supplementation are required to maintain the structure and function of cells throughout the body. A vast body of research demonstrates the important role DHA and EPA play in maintaining cardiovascular, immunological, visual, cognitive and mental health.

The Omega-3 Paradox is that long-chain omega-3 fatty acids are so important for health, yet so deficient in our diets. The average daily intake of DHA and EPA is very low across all sectors of the population. Date from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) estimates that roughly 8 in 10 Americans have inadequate omega-3 status.
