Natural Foods Merchandiser

Stock up now: Nondairy ice cream

Consumers shirking dairy for dietary or ethical reasons are not passing up the pint. In the natural channel, nondairy dessert sales (which include soy- and rice-based products but not fruit ice or sorbet) were up almost 18 percent between March 2009 and March 2010, according to Schaumberg, Ill.-based market research firm SPINS.

Living Harvest Foods’ Tempt Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert
A natural balance of omega-3s and omega-6s gives this frozen dessert, made with pesticide-free hemp nuts, a nutritional edge. All five flavors, including the popular coffee biscotti, are vegan and gluten free.

Good Karma’s Organic Rice Divine
Available in 10 U.S. Department of Agriculture-certified organic flavors, this dessert is made from the milk of sustainably harvested whole-grain rice, the company says.

Julie’s Organic Non-Dairy Bars
Vanilla sandwiches, chocolate-dipped bars and fudge bars are sweetened with agave nectar and made with coconut cream which, unlike coconut milk, is extracted from the meat of the coconut. The result, the company says, is an exceptionally creamy and decadent dessert.

Turtle Mountain’s Purely Decadent
Though the company says its soy-based, gluten-free cookie dough–cream flavor continues to be a top seller, Turtle Mountain keeps its product line fresh by continually adding adventurous flavors such as cherry nirvana, chocolate brownie almond and chocolate obsession.
