Inside Organic

The organic industry continues to thrive, with sales reaching an all-time high of $67.6 billion in 2022 and showing consistent year-over-year growth, according to the Organic Trade Association’s latest numbers. Yet, amidst this success, a lack of consumer awareness and confusion around organic’s benefits still abound. The need to elevate the messages and practices that define the organic industry and ensure its integrity has become more crucial than ever. In response to this, the second annual Inside Organic Summit is set for 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, June 6.  Industry experts will delve into the benefits of organic across the supply chain, from its foundational integrity to its role in mitigating climate change and increasing sustainability.

Exploring the organic marketplace

The Inside Organic Summit aims to shed light on the known and lesser-known benefits shaping today's organic marketplace. Leading experts will talk about these benefits, offering valuable insights and identifying areas where breakdowns in understanding and communication occur within the organic industry. “By pinpointing these challenges, the summit seeks to provide solutions and strategies to effectively elevate key organic messages across the entire supply chain,” says Inside Organic Summit coordinator Nancy Coulter-Parker.

The summit boasts an impressive lineup of speakers who will offer diverse perspectives and expertise. Tom Chapman, CEO and executive director of the Organic Trade Association, will provide the latest industry numbers and updates from the recently released OTA Annual Survey Report, offering valuable insights into the current state of the organic market. This presentation will enable attendees to grasp the growth and potential of the organic industry and its impact on the broader economy. Subsequently,  Jennifer Tucker, the deputy administrator for the National Organic Program, will discuss the newly implemented Strengthening Organic Enforcement rule and its role in mitigating fraud, upholding the integrity of the USDA Organic seal and ensuring ongoing consumer trust in organic products.

Mercaris Founder and CEO Kellee James will delve into the economic aspects of organic agriculture and challenge misconceptions around its ability to sustainably meet global food demand, while Chris Anderson, vice president of Sustainable Strategies, will provide insights into how the USDA Organic seal is perceived and valued in international markets. Attendees can expect to gain a deeper understanding of the global recognition and importance of the USDA Organic seal.

Highlighting research and consumer Insights

Understanding the organic consumer and the role of research in the organic marketplace are also key components to be addressed at the summit. Three industry leaders will provide deep insights into today's organic shopper: Kathy Risch, SVP of Shopper Insights & Thought Leadership at Acosta-Business Intelligence; Sherry Frey, VP of Total Wellness at NielsenIQ; and Nick McCoy, co-founder and managing director of Whipstitch Capital. “This knowledge will be invaluable for industry stakeholders looking to tailor their strategies, products and messaging to meet the evolving needs and preferences of organic consumers,” Coulter-Parker says.

Understanding what messages current scientific organic research supports will also be addressed through the lens of esteemed speakers David LeZaks from the Croatan Institute; Alison Grantham of Grow Well Consulting; and Amber Sciligo of The Organic Center. Together, they will address pivotal findings in organic research, including the effects of organic practices on climate change, nutritional qualities and sustainability. This exploration of research-backed evidence will provide attendees with a deeper understanding of the positive impact of organic practices on the environment and human health. In addition to these speakers, the Summit will spotlight the organic and regenerative organic stories of ingredient companies, producers, manufacturers and brands from seed to shelf.

As the organic industry continues to expand, Coulter-Parker explains that the second annual Inside Organic Summit stands as a vital event to address the challenges and opportunities within the industry. The main takeaways from this year's summit will include actionable strategies to overcome communication barriers, elevate key organic messages and promote the integrity of the organic seal. Additionally, attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of the organic marketplace, consumer behavior and the latest research, allowing them to make informed decisions and contribute to the ongoing growth and sustainability of the organic marketplace.
